Default Shopping Around for Auto Insurance

Last year I used State Farm for my auto insurance up until mid-summer, then I switched over to AllState. I'm looking to switch again and would like to use someone locally.

Who do you guys like/recommend/know about? I'm trying to stay away from mainstream companies, but it's whatever. I know people's prices vary per individual with each company. I have yet to check out Geico or Progressive for the mainstream ones, but would prefer to support local business if there's anyone with a good reputation around here.

Thanks!

I've had a good experience with Progressive. There are local reps for them if you had to talk to a person, but I don't care about that so much. I've been happy with their online system. Each winter I take off a couple vehicles, and each summer I put them back on. It's painless to do that online, and the payment system is easy too.

Knock on wood, I haven't had to do a claim yet, so I don't have an opinion about that.

I use State Farm, have been with them since driving began. Been pretty happy with them and have a great local agent.

Fiance has Geico and seems fairly happy with them as well.

my ONLY word of caution, and it really only applies if 1) you ever plan on moving to L48 and 2) if they havent changed it by now. Short of it, back in ~95 my brother lived here and got Progressive insurance, when he moved back to STL and tried to hook back up with State Farm (or Allstate) he was considered "high risk" due to him having used Progressive. That very well could have changed by now though.

Been with Progressive since 2004. Love my local agent. It's a matter of a quick e-mail on what I want to add, change, or delete and it's done. I think it's the Alaska insurance agency.

Insurance Max is good too. Max is a pretty good guy and will normally hook anyone up. He's also a Progressive agent.

Progressive is FTW in my book, they always have given me good service and promptly. Plus Flo is a hot piece of...er...back on subject. Local agents are also helpful. Plus they called me every 6-8 months or so and lowered my rates without lowering the coverage. Definitely a win for me. I plan to shop around just to double check my coverages but so far Progressive has been the best for me personally. But I'm also expensive since I'm a single male, so society brands me as a hazard behind the wheel =\

State farm since 98. Every time I've looked else where, people wanted more money.

I had a guy blow a red light and he had state farm, when I tried to collect it was a pain, had a girl hit me a few weeks later, worked with Geico and it was effortless to get a check and get on my way.

I switched to Geico and overall it's pretty straight forward, easy to work with, watch what you put as deductables...but I'm fairly sure they aren't the cheapest any more :/

I use a local state farm agent. The family has used him for 15 years or so for all our vehicles. I stop by the local agent every 6 months to pay my bill (and to get some face time) and they always remember my name.

In December when I had my first accident, I also received a $500 dollar ticket for outdated proof of insurance. My agent took care of that for me, with Juneau and all, so now it's off my record. They also forgave my accident ($5k damages to my car alone) and my rates have actually decreased this year.

I've been with them for 10 years, and 3 years ago I shopped around when I bought the WRX... Nobody could beat their rates. I have full max coverage for my car, and so far my rates have gone down 25% in the 3 years of ownership. If you stick with an insurance company long enough, they recognize the loyalty at the local agent level and cut you more discounts... I bet switching every year doesn't help your case.

My family was with State Farm for almost 20 years. I had been since I was 18, so almost 9 years last year. Gary Annis was the agent we used. He was an ass, but normally we didn't deal with him directly. He's known for having a quick turnaround of staff. Anyways, he started getting difficult all the sudden and pretty much burned the bridge for dealing with State Farm, at least for the moment.

You're right, we looked around before and no one was cheaper, but my family would rather pay more to be treated better. AllState has nice people, but they suck at communicating and their online service leaves much to be desired.

We're going to look into Progressive this weekend and check out the ones you guys have recommended so far.

Thanks for all of your input!

I just called State farm to get a quote and see...$1253 every 6 months for insurance. HOLY ****!!! If I took that policy and my car didn't depreciate I'd pay the value of my car in just 2.5 years

State Farm was cool up until this Dodge Nitro hit my 08 FSXT and we had the same insurance. I had full coverage, damage was $800, deductible was $500. Unknown to me at the time was that I was eligible for $250 deductible, but even though I asked BEFORE I drove the FSXT up from Utah if there was any other options I could switch around before driving it up, it was never mentioned that I could've lowered the deductible... About 8 months later I got $100 back as a "settlement" for the other guy hitting me.

Pretty much got fed up with State Farm after 2009. They stopped making my family and I feel special, so might as well look elsewhere, right? We're kind of hitting that same spot with AllState. We're just looking for some consistency and ease-of-use.

Meh. I pay $633.00 every six months for full coverage on two cars for a 100,000/300,000 liability policy with comp/collision on both cars set at $200.00 deductibles.

It's too bad you don't have USAA Chano.. they're super cheap, awesome customer service, super easy to file a claim with and just all around awesome. I shop around to double check the rates every once in awhile but the closest insurance company is Geico but they want almost double what I pay with USAA.

Well all this talk had me switch to progressive and save $30 a month. I had geico with $1000 deductibles on comp and collision and going with progressive dropped them to $100 for comp and $500 for collision and still saved $30.

Look into Dave Strike for State Farm. I never see him, but his front office gals have been there forever and are uber nice and helpful.
