Default back up camera install

alright i'll try to keep this as short and simple as possible.

car: 2005 STi
headunit: Pioneer AVH-2500BT

alright, installed my pioneer a few weeks ago. did the bypass module... so I can use all the video features without the parking brake on. no issues.

decided if it had the option for backup camera, might as well put one on.

bought a cheap Chinese backup camera with great reviews off amazon.

here's the install:

Video (yellow) cable, from pioneer (VIDEO IN) to the back of the vehicle, plugs into the yellow video plug on the camera.

Purple (reverse camera input) from headunit wiring, run to the back of car, tapped into 12v (brown yellow stripe wire) on reverse light harness.

power (12v constant red, and black ground) cable from camera, black to ground on the car, and red to the same 12v (brown/yellow wire) on reverse light harness.

when I put the car in reverse the screen changes to a black screen that says "warning, the image may be reversed." so I know the reverse wire is triggering the headunit to switch to reverse display.

when I go to manually turn the camera on in setting and hit "camera on" I get the same black screen that says "warning, the image may be reversed"

I thought maybe I messed up the wiring, double checked everything, thought maybe the camera came broken since it was a cheap one and some reviews said they arrived broken. I ordered another mid range one (50$) and installed... same thing, just a black screen with "warning, the image may be reversed"

I think I installed correctly, just have settings or something wrong. I have camera polarity on battery, tried it on ground as well. camera settings I've tried everything, ntsc, pal, and nothing.

video cable goes into the "IN" plug on the headunit correct? any other suggestions of things to check?

try powering it from a different source.
I ran the amp turn on lead from my headunit (also a pioneer) to the rear to turn on my amp and to the camera (so the camera is on whenever the stereo is on)

check the connections too, make sure the ground is a good one etc.
I expect it'll be something little and stupid that is the problem because the chances of getting 2 bad camera has to be real close to zero

thanks. I will look at the connections again. yes I assumed two bad cameras would be unlikely.

weird that it does engage to camera mode when I shift to reverse, or hit "camera on" manually from my settings. So I think it is hooked up right, maybe just have a setting wrong.

I powered from my remote wire on my amp. Still functions as it should- when I shift to reverse the screen changes and gives the image warning but black screen no image. Same with turning on camera manually on the head unit. I think it's hooked up right but maybe a setting is wrong...

HEAD UNIT [AV IN]------------video cable-----------------------Camera-------------------[power wire]-----12v power, ground.
[Purple Reverse Wire signal]-----------------------------------------12v Power

settings: Camera Polarity, set to BATTERY
Camera settings, NTSC
AV Input, NTSC

I've tried switching the polarity to ground, tried switching the settings and input to PAL, and whatever other ones are in there.
