Default 98 GT Shifter Question

Well, been a long time since I've posted here. Few may remember me. I pretty much departed this forum when I picked up my first SVX, a '93, wrecked in 2008, and replaced by my '97. Howdy!

I still have the '98 GT Wagon, and I've recently become annoyed with the slop in the 5-spd shifter, equipped with Cusco bushings. Close inspection of the shifter interface proved everything still tight and secure, but I found that the nylon ball on the end of the lever has loosened considerably over the years, allowing a good deal of movement of the lever without moving the ball. My question is regarding interchangeability between years/models so I can locate the newest, minimally worn unit I can find on a parts search. My Wagon currently has 234K miles, on her second engine since 175K, and I don't figure to find anything "like new" in that model year at the salvage yard. Anyone? TIA!

Glenn

Stick with something 97+ for compatibility. I'm not sure what the cutoff year was for newer vehicles when they changed the width of the shifter linkage connection to the shifter. Probably around 05?

Rebuilding your linkage while you're at it would be a good idea. Here's a helpful link:
http://www.ludicrous-speed.com/wiki/...le_Shifter_Fix

I ordered the MDS filled Nylon bushings instead of the regular ones he used from the same website: http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-sl...arings/=h0thay (click on "Plastic flange sleeved bearings")
Part # 6294K441

I found that instead of reusing the rivet like he did, that 3/8" x 2.5" grade 8 bolts worked well rather than pressing the bushing back in and getting a really tight fit.

Thank you muchly Mark. Actually more info than I was looking for, but admit to wondering if the linkage end of the lever had been so sloppy last time I looked at it. Now I know! I'll rebuild that little knuckle while I'm at it as recommended, and never again watch the shifter rock over 3 inches when I tuck her into a turn. Thanks again!!
