Default Calling Fishguy. Fish question - all welcome

Hey, so I was just at the local aquarium store... I saw a fish I'd like, but in the past haven't always made the best match for my tank... I thought about asking the employees, but the little zit faced kids were to concerned about Am. Idol. I left, got in my car(after three years it's still a great experience!) and started to think about who I know who knows anything about fish... Hence I'm back in the i-Club OT after many months of abstanence...

May I abuse your knowledge? That goes for anybody who can help here.

Two weeks ago I downsized from a 55 to a 25-30, I was underpopulated and am moving into a new/smaller apartment. At the moment I've got a few Congo Tetras, a Glass Cat(that guy will survive the next nuclear war) & the ubiquitous Pleco. Then two interesting fish, a Black Ghost Knife(10" and very cool) and a Polypterus .

As far as I can tell the GK and Poly aren't supposed to cohabitate, but both have lived happily in the same tank for about a year.

NOW, I'm at the store and I see a Figure 8 Puffer. To the best of my knowledge this is a brackish fish, but I've seen online where they can do fine in freshwater(one guy was even saying it's a freshwater puffer) at the store they said it's in a freshwater tank... The guy is little, about the size of my forefinger from the second knuckle, well within the size of dinner for the Poly and GK. But to argue the dinner theory, it seems that both the Poly and GK are extreemely docile and very tolerent of other fish...

So what's the chances for this little puffer in this tank? would he stress out and croak. Would he fatten the Poly in the middle of the night?

Overall he's cheap, so I'm not loosing much if I go pick him up, but I don't like knowingly giving such pretty fish a death sentence..

I'd put him in his own tank, just to have him, but the wife says no

the figure 8 puffers can be either fresh or brakish.
they're versitale like that.

they are intresting fish to watch.. but they have a horrible tendancy to nip the fins of the other fish in the aquarium.

so you may want to avoid it based upon that.. if you're really concerend about the other fish in the tank.

they have freshwater leapord puffers as well.. bright green with black spots on it's back.

Hey, I have a Black ghost knife right now, and a Polypterus. Those are my 2 favorite fish, also have some real nice rainbows. As far as the figure 8 puffer. Usually they are brakish but can be found now and then in freshwater. Most likely one of the most amusing fish to watch. I don't think your polypterus would do anything to him. Mine really pays no intrest in all the assorted rainbows I have and didn't even try and eat the Neon tetras I had for a while (20+ till the ruby tail rainbow ate them all). Problem with the puffer is they like to nip at fish, and have a good set of teeth to do so. You'll see tiny puffer bites out of their fins, and in some cases they even bit the plastic plants in the tank. Personally I'd give it a try, you'll really like them. If I found one again I'd most likely pick it up.

God, that was bad Bruce! Very bad.

care to admit just how long you've been waiting to use that one?

FISH, THANKS! I hadn't thought about his impact... The GK just lays around all day, he might be kinda pissed having the little guy nipping at him... Him and the Poly I'd like to keep healthy. The rest I couldn't give two *****s for.

Maybe I can talk the Better Half into okaying it... Now that I think about it... Her birthday IS coming up in just a few days, this would make a really nice gift!!!

Thanks again Fishguy!

Good to meet you Ed, don't think you were active while I was still around this club... Gotta agree the GK and Poly are my two favorite, by far.

My Poly does eat a lot of fish, he's knocked off at least 4 glass cats, and a few others... The GK has beaten to death a few Plecos, this is the first one that's lasted more than a few weeks... I read somewhere that the pleco messes with the GK's electric system...

After reading your post it got me to thinking... Maybe I should get him, perhaps he'll kill off some of the others, then I'll put him in his own tank and I'll convert to an African tank... Then I'll get that short shift for the car... And the printer for the computer... and that pair of sunglasses...

I have a small 10 gallon tank that has been dry since christmas. I would like to start some fishys. What are good fish to put in a warm fresh water tank?

I have an undergravel filter with a powerhead and all that stuff.

I just need some fish.

I want to get a fiddler crab, but I dont know about other fish. I dont want a lot of fish, but I like the looks of the bala sharks. I hear you need a school of them though.

Any suggestions?

I was a fish tech at a pet store for 5 years and have had more aquariums than I can count.

What Fishy told you is all alright, the puffer is actually a brackish water fish but can survive in fresh if properly introduced. They are more likely to stress and catch diesease in a frsh water tank though

(wishes he had taken a picture of his moray eel tank)

Man, that thing was just scary to clean. Full of rocks, and 5 Moray Eels. Tank would look empty till you stuck your hand in and then they would start to come out of everywhere. Oscars are guppies compared to my morays. Nice looking oscars though. I had a real nice albino tiger oscar for a long time, I miss that one.
