A good FAQ, frequently updated, would really solve this issue once and for all.

For every brilliant discussion that breaks new ground and expands the community knowledge, there are ten idiotic, repetitive ones. It's especially bizarre to read a thread where several of the FOUR THOUSAND newbies that this site has picked up in the last six months argue back and forth. Then someone like shiv pops in with a sage comment or two and nobody knows who he is. What fun.

I'd like to try that at work from now on. Anytime that anybody asks me a question, I'll just tell them to **** off and go look for the answer on the net because there's a 99.9% chance it's there.

Maybe I'll try that at home too. I'm sure my wife would love that.

I think the difference in opinions here is about why each of us thinks this forum exists. Obviously you think it's here only for educational/technical discussions. I think it's here for social reasons as well. These are relatively rare cars were talking about here and I NEVER see another RS or WRX on the street, much less get a chance to even talk to another owner. This forum and site gives a chance for all of us who have this unique ownership experience in common to come together and discuss whatever strikes our fancy. Obviously, most of the discussion will be car-related. But a lot of it is only semi-car-related.

But another problem with making it a strictly technical discussion is that there's no one right answer to a question. A lot of questions have multiple answers, depending on the opinion of the responder. This is a very good place to gather opinions about technical issues, car dress-up, driving techniques, etc.

Just don't be an ass about it and just let everybody get along. The moderators of this board need to stop making so many damn rules. It used to be a lot of fun coming here, but now I feel like I'm back in high school and have to watch EVERYTHING I say or do because I may get suspended for 3 days just for talking over the ****ing teacher.

Or something...

I couldn't agree more! I am SOOOOO sick of everyone always saying you should search...New threads offer new info and searching doesn't always find exactly what you need. And if the I-Club vets have already been through the subject before they don't have to read it OR respond! C

My motto "Moderation is good....in moderation!"

The mind boggles at the amount of information that has been lost as well. Archives only go back six months max. Imagine if the people that ran this site actually took the good topics and posted the information to the FAQ section!

I did a search, but all I got were 404 errors!!!

heh heh heh

Just a suggestion, guys. One that might help out both sides, and one that several of the members already do.

If you think that a newbie should do a search for the info, do one yourself and post a link to the results. This way, you're giving the information and showing them what a search can do at the same time, without adding hits to search topics.

Sorry to jump in on the lock humor, guys.

I did a search for the word "search".

It gave every thread in which one of you out there said, "Do a search!"

Post Why you shouldn't answer posts...

...when they could search for the answer. If you just take pity on the fool who refuses to search and answer his question you are diluting the power of the search function. For example I post: "what springs are good for my car" Clearly this topic has been covered. So you say to yourself maybe he's new or dumb and, "Oh I am tired of typing search", so you answer using the word "spring" and a brand name. You just added a thread to search results for that brand and any other keywords you used, but your post is nothing new or informative. In essence every time you answer a post that could easily be searched for you slow down the search function and increase the number of repeat posts that one has to read when they do search. Please reply that the guy should search then no one else post that way the thread falls to the bottom and new searches don't hit it as much.

I'm starting to get kind of frustrated with these responses. "Don't post that because it's already been posted; just do a search" is really starting to get on my nerves. Most of the questions I have HAVE already been posted, but it takes me an average of an HOUR to find the correct answer if I do a search. There's a lot of garbage and other stuff in the archives that makes finding the appropriate answer nearly impossible.

If you were to actually follow your logic, then we might as well shut down this forum RIGHT NOW because EVERY question that is asked on this board has probably been posted and answered SOMEWHERE on the internet. So people just stop wasting space here and spend a couple of weeks searching for answers on the 1000s of Subaru websites out there. Right?

Also, if you haven't noticed, there are new aftermarket products for the Impreza being offered DAILY. Doing a search on the best springs for an Impreza in the archives from a year ago will give DRAMATICALLY different responses if you ask the question today.

And my experience has taught me that there's a LOT of knowledge floating around in the heads of members on this very board that does NOT exist in the archives. Some people are pure geniuses when it comes to modifying Subarus but you have to literally beat the information out of them if you want to learn something.
