I just want to know why a highly paid time-traveling hitman drives a Miata?

Maybe he's angling to become a NASIOC mod ? It's the only way.

If time travel is illegal, only criminals will travel in time.

Quote:
Looper is a tremendous motion picture experience. Not merely a "very good" one, but a great one. It delivers on all possible levels and its missteps are few and minor. It's a rousing science fiction/fantasy tale with a dose of hard-hitting drama, an edgy approach that denies Hollywood's penchant for formula, and a smart script that was crafted with care and an attention to detail. For writer/director Rian Johsnson, Looper represents a worthy follow-up to his earlier offbeat efforts, Brick and The Brothers Bloom. It's the best title on an impressive filmography.

Time travel is a fantasy concept and, as such, is subject only to the rules imposed upon it by a writer. Most filmmakers who elect to employ it resort to clichés and don't spend a lot of time carefully considering the implications of paradoxes. This is not the case with Looper. Although Johnson's interpretation of time travel cannot be said to be any more "realistic" than any other, it feels that way. There are rules that the screenplay does not violate. More importantly, it doesn't resort to "twists" that have become so commonplace that they are no longer surprising.
Cautious optimism mode!

'very good' and 'science-fiction' are not often seen together.

(please bring back intelligent movies, please bring back intelligent movies, please bring back...)

Critics seem to think it's smart. I'm hoping audiences agree and it gets money as a result.

I kind of wanted to watch it. Now I REALLY want to watch it.

Just came back from the midnight show. Definitely entertaining, a worth while watch. I did not feel robbed of the $10.50 that I paid nor was my time wasted. As in all movies of this variety, there is always one aspect that just bothers you or just plain does not make any sense, in this case it was the time travel aspect. After watching movies with accurate time travel theories in play such as "Primer", "The Time Traveler's Wife", hell, even "Back to the Future", "Looper" just falls short, but overall a fantastic movie.

By the way, as I was killing time this evening before the midnight showing, for all those Joseph Gordon-Levitt fans out there, check out "Brick" circa 2005 which was also written and directed by Rian Johnson.

Brick is one of my all time favourite indie flicks, since I suck at remembering names I did not realize it was the same director.

Will definitely be seeing this one.

Looks awesome. I like Bruce Willis, and they did a good job with the makeup, so this is purely speculation aside from a potential missed opportunity: how about Scott Bakula as older JGL?

Carl Spackler: So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one -- big hitter, the Lama -- long, into a ten-thousand foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier. And do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga...gunga -- gunga galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
