Default 06 Impreza 2.5i Poor Radio Reception

Hello,

We recently upgraded from a 1998 Subaru Legacy to a 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5i. We have a Kenwood stereo, which I transplanted from the Legacy to the Impreza.

However, in the Impreza, with both the stock stereo and Kenwood, the radio reception is terrible. Stations we used to get in the Legacy are coming in very poorly.

I have checked the antenna cable, and it is firmly attached to my stereo.

Is there anything I can do to get better reception? (aside from a satellite radio, or ipod dock)

Thanks!

When installing an aftermarket radio in that model year Impreza, you need to make sure the remote antenna wire from the Kenwood stereo is wired to the AM/FM tuner turn on lead. The antenna for the radios in these cars are actually on the rear glass, hence the need for the powered AM/FM antenna.

The red arrow points to where the antenna lead connects to the glass foil:

All Subaru factory radios provide this signal on pin 14, whether or not the car it was in had a motorized antenna or antenna amplifier.

The radio activates this pin only while you're listening to AM/FM (not disc, tape, or aux) -- so it cannot be used as a remote turn-on for a speaker amplifier.

On an aftermarket radio installation harness (which you should use), pin 14 is usually a solid Blue wire. That is the standard color for "power antenna control."

When installing an after-market radio, here's what you should connect to the Subaru's antenna control pin (choices from "best" to "worst"):
  1. "Power antenna" output. Most after-market radios have this, usually a solid Blue wire. This will activate the antenna only while you listen to AM/FM.
  2. Amplifier remote control (usually a Blue/White wire). Not all after-market radios have this. This will activate the antenna whenever the radio is on, even when you switch to CD or AUX input.
  3. For head units that lack both of the above wires, your only other choice is to connect the Subaru's antenna control pin to Accessory power (+12V switched). Then the antenna amp will be 'on' (or the motorized antenna will extend) whenever you turn the ignition key to ACC or ON.

Thanks a ton! I looked, and I had not connected this wire in the old Legacy.

Think so, flipped through the stations and they all come in fine.

I was a bit scared of your description of the problem at first, wasn't too sure how to interpret it (I am a novice). But I deciphered it and this is how it was: The white wire connecting to pin 14 of the stock wiring harness (which was the power antenna of the car), was connected to the blue wire of my wiring harness. However this blue wire was not connected to the antenna control wire of my stereo.

Once I connected the blue wire of my wiring harness to the antenna control wire (white/blue) of my stereo, the stations came in.

Thanks again!
