Default Looking for options..

'04 wrx sedan. Not all that thrilled with the factory system, but I could live... my biggest complaint is the bass. either theres always too much, and it dilutes everything and sounds horrible, or its barely noticable. theres no sweet spot. I know nothing of subs, amps and brands...so any info is appreciated. What I want, something to get the bass out, make it known, without diluting EVERYTHING else. good sound, reliable manufacturer...but without breaking the bank. I need the whole set up, sub, box, amp, any wires not included with both that are needed. Next question, cabin or trunk? I would prefer cabin somewhere, but we all know there isnt much spare room in there without removing a seating option (which isnt all bad...who says I want to be a taxi?), so the trunk is a fine option...but I tend to use my trunk on a daily basis. my gear for the fire department, and anything I need for work (landscaping/treework), that I provide. Dont want to risk it boucing around on my country roads and damaging something... Thoughts?

When you say you want to get the bass out, do you mean you want more of it?

I'd suggest that you start at the basics and get a head unit, and some upgraded speakers as well. An amp will make it louder and crisper, but you don't need to do everything at once. That alone, without a subwoofer will be an improvement over your stock system.

Are you looking for an aftermarket head unit? Or are you happy with your stock unit?

With an aftermarket unit, you can get added features, colors, etc. Some people like to stick with one brand for a head unit, sub, amp, etc. But you don't have to, with most amps/head units you can switch one with each other.

Steering wheel controls if you have them require an additional module, but are easily configured into a system and anyone can do it.

As for the space of a subwoofer in the trunk, honestly, you can get some really small boxes, even some that take the place of your spare tire if you can live without it. It you can't figure about a square foot of space for the sub box and an amp attached to the top, side or back of it. You're going to want to securely mount the sub box in your trunk, you don't want it flying it you have to stop fast.

The head unit Im ok with. I dont really mind what features I have available. as long as I can get music out of it, I'm happy. The only complaint I have, is no AUX port, but I have a tape deck so its not *that* big of a deal. Could an aftermarket head unit clear the bass up a bit?

I want the bass more defined, but not drowning out the rest of the music with that ugly bass sound that you get. Its too much for whats available in the factory system, or not enough. The thought of aftermarket speakers has crossed my mind, but in my minimal expierence with others that I know who have had them, they didnt do it for me. Steering wheel controls dont really matter to me. Gonna set my music, set my volume, and leave it.

I found a small footprint sub with a built in amp, and people seem to love it. Was thinking about putting it under my seat or the passenger seat.
