Default Really bad front end clunking

so I'm having a really bad clunking noise from the front end of my car. the noise is really loud and happens a lot. Its almost like a metal on metal popcorn, and I can feel it in my feet while driving. It started in the front right, but now feels like its in the front left also. If the roads are perfectly smooth it doesn't clunk as much, but any imperfections in the road make it constantly clunk.

the car is a 2004 WRX wagon 5spd. only suspension modification is coilovers witch were installed about a month ago. had the car aligned 3 weeks ago before it was having this problem camber set at 2.2 in the front.

Things I've checked

sway bar
endlinks
preload on the springs
torqued down bolts on control arms and sub-frame
checked all bolts on the coilovers and camber plates
ball joints are fairly new.

any idea what it could be? thanks

Double and triple check everything you have already checked. If you got under the car and looked over all of that an you still can't find the clunking you might have over looked something.

Bad bushings maybe?

I've been checking it almost every day just thinking I forgot something.

one other thing to add the cv boots have no rips or tears, but there is a little bit of grease on both front axles

Are your noises similar to this?

The loud click happens when I let off the gas. But at the end of the video the "popping" happens when I accelerate.

Sound like your popping?

yeah like the noise in the begining , but mine is way more frequent. sometimes multiple clunks per second. and it doesn't matter if I'm on the gas, braking, or turning its all the same. I'll see if i can get a video, but my car is really loud.

Hmm, Happens whether the AC is on or off? Check your motor mounts? Trans mounts?

High speed / Low speed?

Thump or a tapping noise?

Go in a parking lot and do a bunch of turns / loops etc... Find out what makes it clunk. That's what I do with any cars if I can't figure it out. Hit speed bumps with half the car, etc...

Try this and let us know what you find

Arbitrarily diagnosing bumps over teh interwebz is difficult without some good tips.

-Dave

P.S. it could be your exhaust hitting something, do you have any exhaust mods?

Ok thanks I'll try that stuff out.

AC belt is not on the car currently
i have cusco solid engine and tranny mounts, so i don't think its that

i have a turbo back exhaust, I've checked that and nothing seems to be wrong.

here's a short video i just took. you can really start to hear the noise at around 27 seconds

sorry its a cell phone video

I watched the video and your noises sound similar to mine. Only that yours happen at any time, not just acceleration or going up hills like me.

Idk man, I'm stumped as to what it could be, on yours or mine.

I have had a similar noise in my 2.5i now for a few months. If you pay close attention, it looked like it happens when you hit bumps (when camera shakes) just like mine (nothing to do with acceleration/deceleration/elevation). No clue what it is though, always assumed it's a blown strut (or both fronts).

Does it feel like a "binding feeling" when making slow tight turns? And yes I have noticed the same metal popping sound as well

I have the same noise. seems to happen as I hit bumps in the road. I read earlier that I should grease the sway bar front. but I do feel it in the peadls as well as hear it when i hit bumps. not really when turning or accell. so i need to check the motor mounts and grease the sway bar? bought it at 60000 and has 112000 now and have never greased the sway bar.

just to update or for anyone who is having this problem i looked into everything and was about to start replacing parts one by one when I checked the top strut mount bolts and they were both about 5-6 turns lose. tightened those up and now clicking in pedals and clicking sound is gonesville. hope this helped someone.

Default Possible Solution!

I'm having the same issue!! I couldn't recreate the noise while parked until yesterday I had my g/f rock the car from the passenger side while I was looking under it, I grabbed my sway arm and IT was popping, almost like it was binding up somehow. I just got my car out of the tranny shop and this noise came with it, they said they didn't touch it but we all know how that goes. I can't tell exactly what is causing the sway arm to do this. I have the COBB aftermarket one, never had an issue before. I think they bent it or something but I can't really tell but I definitely know it's coming from the front sway bar. Mine sounds just like the video a few threads up, even worse though, embarrassing to drive!!

Default Popping Noise Solved (for me at lease)

I figured my loud popping out. It was the lower bolt on the right side end link for my sway bar. It was a little bit loose, just enough to pop loud as hell for the whole world to hear. The nuts on there just regular nuts with a flange. I went to Ace Hardware and bought nylon locking ones and replaced all four, just for piece of mind.

To anyone getting that noise in the videos above, try tightning the bolts on your end links and make sure the whole thing isn't just spinning inside. I had to put pressure on the end link it self with a pry bar to get the old ones out and the new ones in cause they just kept spinning round n round. Good luck!

I have a similar issue. I think it's the top hat bearings in my case.
