Default Auto X-Ray OBD II code reader

This is a great, handheld code reader that will allow you to scan your ECU for trouble codes, and if there are any, allow you to turn off your check engine light without having to go to the dealer.

It is actually the full function OBD scanner that Auto X-Ray sells, except that some of the functions have been disabled for those who only need to read and reset trouble codes. If you find you would need these functions (data capture, oxygen tests, etc.) you can have them activated either on the Internet or with a simple phone call.

It takes less than 5 minutes to set up and has some great features for the price:
Scans existing trouble codes (ones that have turned on the check engine light)
Scans pending codes (codes that have been set in the ECU only once, but not enough times to activate the check engine light)
Scans the Emission readiness tests and can reset these tests (this is the test that the ECU goes through each time the car is started, to determine whether all the emission controls are in place and functioning)
Resets all codes and turns off the CEL's
All codes found are displayed in plain english (no flashing lights to count, etc.)
500 hour battery life (on 4 AA batteries)
Auto shut off (after 30 minutes, to save batteries)
Stores any codes found, in it's memory for later reference
1 Year warranty, but if you register online, it's extended to 3 years!
Free Internet software upgrades (you will need to buy the interface cable)
Lifetime tech support

I never thought that I would need or use one of these, but if you're going to modify your car, or if your state has emissions testing, it's a cheap investment. I'd rather be able to do it myself than have the dealer have to do it, and snoop around my car at the same time. Considering all it does and the complexity of it all, I think the price is exceptional. Just a few years back, you couldn't get one of these for less than $1000, and then only if you were a dealer!

Bought mine from www.autotestsys.com for $132.99 w/ free shipping. More info on this is also at www.autoxray.com

Default OBD scanner

Did you get a code book? I have an '03 wrx and want a scanner but the books seem to end at 99. Are the codes the same for the newer cars?

Don't need a code book as it has the factory Subaru codes built in. At least for codes I've pulled so far, it was able to tell me what it was.

Calvin is right on, this reader has the Subaru OBD codes already built right in... When you first configure it, you just select "Subaru OBD" instead of "Generic OBD". If any codes are found when you do a scan, it will display the name of the code in plain english! Pretty neat little tool, IMHO........

I have this unit (the full-featured version) and it's great. I keep it in the car all the time in case I get a CEL or someone else does.
Even with "Subaru OBDII" selected there are some codes that will come up with the proper # but the description will be "undefined" or something like that. For these you will have to look up the code definition. There have been full listings of the '02 codes posted on i-club, a search should turn them up.

Has the price gone up for this item? I don't see the price being at $132.99, but at $199 for the Advanced reader. Is this the one? I am also looking for this cheap investment. I just went to a Subaru mechnic and charged me for $39 for pulling one code. Damn!!!

The price has not gone up. Go to www.autotestsys.com and do a search under "autoxray". You want the EZ-Link OBDII code reader model #ATX10155. It's still $132.99. They also sell a hard case for about $20 bucks but you have to ask .

Default Update...

Don't know if I mentioned this, but this code reader reads ALL N/A cars....Case in point......
The check engine light came on in my sister-in-law's Cavalier. I just reconfigured the reader for GM OBD (all of 10 seconds work) and scanned her ECU......worked perfectly, got the code, reset the check engine light...
The problem? She left her gas cap loose.....

I recently bought the Actron CP9135 OBDII AutoScanner at AutoZone for around $150 bucks. But the unit y'all are talking about here looks real good, too! It's great to have choices.

I've since traded mine in for the AutoXray EZ-Scan 6000, which is the top of their line. It's ridiculously high-priced and I wouldn't have bought it outright, but they have an excellent trade-in/upgrade program and the deal was too good to pass up. So, with both this unit and my Delta Dash, I can do full ECU data logging (DD) or OBDII reading (AutoXray).

Yep, got the EZ SCAN 4000 myself. It's upgradable to CAN(COntroller Area Network) the new operating system on 2006+ cars coming out, which was a big selling point in my book, for the future cars I own. I like the monitoring feature of the reader. Highly recommended product, Keith

So by the way just to update this thread the EZ Scan 1000 these days is $129 just about everywhere. I initially ordered from www.autotestsys.com with free shipping, but after a week without the product I contacted them and they said they were backorderd. I then went on to order the item for the same price at www.midwayautosupply.com

For EZ-Scan owners-
I just picked up an EZ-Charge battery tester module from Eastwood (www.eastwood.com), they have them on clearance for $89 (AutoXray list is $139).
This is a great little unit to have around. It connects to the scanner and in just a few seconds measures the actual cranking capacity of your battery and tells you if it's good, needs a charge or is NG.
Info here-
http://autoxray.com/products.aspx?sub=acc&id=38
You will need to upgrade your EZ-Scan to the latest software if you haven't already.
