Question 2011 Rockford Fosgate P3's or Alpine type R's

hey guys so i had alpine type r's for a couple of months but they blew okay but for my next subs i am looking for even more powerful and or louder subs that are durable and was recommended the P3's and was told they are better and louder than the R's so do you guys recommend any others? and what do you think about the 2011 P3's vs R's Thanks guys for your help!

What amp are you running for those r's, also which ones were they dual 2ohm or dual 4ohm?

I ran two dual 4ohm 12" r's each with their own 1000watt alpine v-power amp and never blew one. I have since upgraded to 12" x's with 2000w v-power amps, have had these for 3 years now and still going strong.

abond2014: It is all about the box design. You cannot go wrong with either brand. I have worked with both companies and designed custom boxes for them and they both sound phenomenal. You can make a lower powered sub sound like it has more than what it is or a high powered sub sound like doo doo.

^Looks like this guy has this thread covered. Excellent. OP, I'd give this post another look. Amplifier? Space? ...etc?

...."I have speaker "X" & they sound great. Go with Speaker X" is not going to do you any good.

cough, cough, t-line lol

The type R has more xmax as well as power handling than the P3. You really shouldn't be blowing them, either acoustically or electrically you are doing something wrong...

Did they both blow? Give every detail, did all four voice coils blow? Were the cones frozen in place? Did they blow at the exact same time? Were there funny noises or complete silence??

The setup is great, shouldn't have had any problems, and Hifonics makes their gains idiot proof(not calling YOU an idiot...) so it should have been very difficult to blow that setup.

if you wired these to a 1 ohm load your amp would only put out 1200 watts, if your running ether a 10 or 12" sub they should handle this with no problem.

One problem might be is that you have the gain set to high and it is clipping the amp causing excessive heat in the sub coil causing premature failure of the sub.

This all comes down the the sub size. The only type r sub to worry about is the 8" that can only handle 350/1000 watt then you would have to wire the pair of subs to 4ohms for them to be ok.

Yeah, those Type R's are able to handle 1000w each without a problem.

Must be tuned wrong.

I am assuming you have 2 12s. .75 is enough for sealed enclosure for tight bass. From what I understand you want louder than the previous set up go ported but you will end up sacrificing a lot of space in your trunk. Keep in mind the type of music you are into as well. I know everyone says I listen to everything, but break it down to what you listen to the most. What is your end goal? I noticed your are in MA too. State is cracking down on noise pollution

In all honesty and my 2cents. Stick with one high wattage sub in a ported box
Alpine R 600w RMS or Rockford P3 400w RMS. I'd recommend Arc Audio Black series.

Should be about a perfect match. Assuming the subs were all wired correctly and in parallel to make a 1ohm load.

I used to do car audio, every "bad" sub I had come back was always user error.

Correction they handle 600watts RMS a piece. Max power is not a rating to go by by any means! Tuning is a highly likely suspect for this issue. Lots of new installers don't notice when there speakers are clipping and they end up frying out their new equipment. Also it's good to go through a break in period with new subs.

Also the P3's and the Type R's handle the same amount of power (600 watts RMS) Someone stated earlier they were different.

Yes, RMS is 600w but having been in car audio for a while, I have seen people put 1000w RMS to it without a problem. All depends on the tune and box hertz/frequency

I personally like the Type R much better because of the construction. The Rockfords have plastic cones which can break very easily.

As for the being loud part, that would depend on your setup (box, tune, power, and car). Hatches are usually louder than sedans because of the box being in the same cabin space as the driver.

stronger magnet
better constuction

IMHO the type R's are better and you shouldnt have blown that sub with the setup you had unless you did something wrong.

i have a single 12in type R running 750w rms at 1 ohm in a tuned slot vented enclosure right now. it is very loud in my 11 wrx hatch and i couldnt see needing anything more then that in my car unless you need it louder for shows or what not.

Probably a blown voice coil. How did you wire your subs?
