Default The Women's World Car of the Year

The votes are in ... and the 2012 Women's World Car of the Year winner is the Range Rover Evoque. The women's what, you say? It's an award given by a panel of female auto writers worldwide - I'm one of the two in Canada - for the vehicles we feel are the best in their categories.
It's a little different from some "women's awards," where grocery capacity and child seat latches are a major factor. We go well beyond that. We also look at how the car drives, how it handles, its appeal, and how well it meets its audiences' expectations. To be eligible, a vehicle has to be sold in at least ten countries.
There were category winners as well:
Family Car: BMW 3 Series (1st), Audi Q3 (2nd), Ford Focus (3rd)
Luxury Car: Range Rover Evoque (1st), Jaguar XJ (2nd), Audi A6 (3rd)
Sports Car: Porsche 911 (1st), Jaguar XKR (2nd), Mercedes-Benz SLK (3rd)
Economy Car: Honda Civic (1st), Volkswagen Up! (2nd), Ford Fiesta (3rd)
Congratulations to all the winners! This year, the trophies will be made in The Netherlands and presented at the Paris Motor Show. For more info on the Women's World Car of the Year, click here.

Honda Civic as the top Economy Car.. really?

Oh.. this is the European Civic they're talking about.. the egg.

I would buy a diesel egg.

As for the Evoque.. I guess "strandability" (the factor that considers how often the car will break down and leave you stranded somewhere) isn't considered.

As a side note, I really wish Honda would take Ford's lead and give us the **** they give Europe.

for being a woman's favorite, my wife sure doesn't like it, nor minivans or wagons, either.

She asked why it isn't a Miata.

I'd think that someone who marries a "car guy" would have better taste than the list in the OP.

She married me, but she admits readily that she can't pick out cars in the parking lot, especially if it isn't a Classic Red painted Miata.

If I point one out specifically, she can thumbs-up, or thumbs-down, but that is about it.

The civic pictured was an immediate and distinctive thumbs-down.

I'm pretty sure you don't wish that. IIRC the Euro Civic gets a beam axle rear suspension (like the Fit/Jazz) while we get the multi-link IRS. The US Civic has more in common with the JDM Civic than the Euro one. Look up the TopGear test of the '05 CTR, they actually preferred the '04 car due to better handling traceable directly to the rear suspension.

I liked the styling of the '05-'11 Euro Civic car, but this new one looks like a Lexus RX that got caught in a vacuum forming machine. I can't wait for the "gaping black maw" styling fad to be over.

I do remember that test, actually.
I hadn't realized the suspensions were different, but good lord does the "egg" look better than the malformed sack of **** we get over here.

The USDM/JDM 9th gen car is unflavored oatmeal with a side of shredded wheat to be sure. I think the '09-'11 USDM/JDM cars are the best of the lot. Maybe the best looking Civic ever, though it's hard to compare to the ~1990 and '98-'01 cars.

That's because the Euro civic is a sexy bodied Fit.. and plenty of people in the US think their Fits handle great.. so I doubt most would notice. It's not like the USDM Civic is a great handler anyway.
