Default Houston Bodyshop - surely this is insane?

So I've got some damage to my front bumper after I dropped off a big curb on Main Street the other day - the front edge is trashed and it's broken a couple of the holes on the bumper cover itself so the whole thing is a bit loose.

Stopped by Mazaro Motorsports (West Houston Subaru's recommend bodyshop)

Basically, I need the following parts:

bumper cover replaced (~$300)
STI front lip replaced (~$350)
various fixins (clips brackets etc) ~$100

and while they had the paint booth fired up i figured i'd have them paint a new (wingless) trunk lid cover (~$450)

Here's the quote I received from them

there's all sorts of crazy labor charges rolled in here, they're quoting me for removing the rear glass, rear quarter glass, etc etc etc

Does $3700 bucks for this sound excessive to the rest of you?

Is there any reason I shouldn't order a new cover and lid, take them to the shop off the car, get them to paint them off the car, and i'll reinstall them myself??

15 hours for removal of the front bumper and trunk lid? i've removed them myself in the driveway in less than an hour!

Just buy all the parts yourself, take them to a shop with your paint code. Should only cost about $500 in paint installing yourself. That's what I did when a semi tread hit the front bumper while on the freeway.

This should end well.

Prepare your angus...we're doing rape!

Seriously though, this would be real easy. Buy used bumper that's already painted on NASIOC. Replica lip is $60 new. To paint a trunk shouldn't cost more than $200 total. To paint a bumper, you shouldn't spend more than $200-$250. Install is too easy to pay someone for. Is your time worth $3700?

Also, it appears as though insurance is paying for everything...not sure what your deductible is, but I wouldn't think a funny hanging bumper is something I would want to claim.

no way this is going through insurance, even if it is $3500 bucks

i'd be happy if i could just get the parts painted. i've removed the bumper so many times anyway i'm probably faster at it than the techs

Get the parts, find a local painter, be done with it. Never trust a shop to order your parts and do the install (unless it's WAY beyond basic skills). Hell, I'm sure there are enough folks around here who can send you in the right direction. All the work you need done (minus the cost of parts) should be less than $600 (based on my experiences).

Why there is nothing special about the real Sti lip. 60$ lip 10$ Sti badge looks exactly the same.

It's actually easier to destroy than the replica. Seriously, you're better off getting the replica.

I hear you. Look on the FS sections...tons of people are willing to trade STi skirts for WRX skirts straight up.

I got my front bumper cover painted and replaced at the dealership body shop for $500 after I was forced into hitting a pothole on the freeway.

12 minutes to install each washer nozzle? really, 12 minutes each? shouldnt take more than 2 each, and that's if you take a break.

Not saying that the price isn't high. But I would guess that they are pulling glass to blend the paint, which is what every shop is going to tell you they want to do if you bring your car in to get something fixed. I had some bumper scuffs I wanted out and the guy went through this whole explanation about how he would have to blend into the quarterpanel, which meant he had to pull any detail striping, etc.

that is what we refer to as 'the go away price'. its a completely legit quote for doing it thoroughly as if it was an insurance claim. since its not an insurance claim there are some ways to go about doing what you want done without going through the extreme dissassembly and replacing each and every clip/part they take off.

I stopped by Gillman's body shop today - the guys there said the guys at mazaro's were off their rockers

replacement of front bumper, trunk lid, paint, prep, blend etc (and no removal of the glass and trim, said that was totally unnecessary) around ~2200. I can live with this.

for what its worth, Mazaro did an outstanding job on painting my bumper replacement a year or so after buying my car. now, the fenders are all rock chipped and the hood is a disgrace, but the bumper looks fantastic for 8 years old!

This was recent. You can't see much of the trunk, but you can see it looks great.

I have a 2011 DGM WRX Prem. My car got hit by a jackass in a jeep. Long story short, Mezaros estimated it at $4200. No frame damaged thank God. Other guys insurance had to pay for it, even if I had to pay for it, I would have. My car was flawless when I got it back. Now if you are paying cash, talk with them. I would think they would work with you. They estimate stuff like this for insurance companies. They rape them. What do you pay for insurance for if you do not use it? I am not saying to use it for minor, but a $3500 estimate is not minor. I am very happy with what they did for me, The jackass that hit my car even slightly scratched my Carbon Fiber SPT trim on the Trunk and when I got my car back, I had a new one bright and shiny. It felt good knowing that my car was cared for. If you think the work you put into this is worth the extra bucks you save go ahead, I spend a good penny on my car, and I only wanted pros working on it. BTW, we need to meet up sometime. I wanna talk with you about your headlights. ( not to thread jack)
