Default Mystery JDM EJ20 Motor

Hey everybody,

I am in need of some sleuthing.
I recently purchased a ej20 motor and was told it was a JDM EJ205 for a JDM 05 WRX. It has single AVCS(intake) says ej20 stamped in the block, the heads have u20 stamped into them and both engine info stickers are gone.

Here are my hints as to why the motor is not a JDM WRX motor. I was working with IA Performance and they said, with the knowledge that the motor was a ej205, their engine and bulkhead wiring harnesses with a jdm ecu would get the avcs system working. Later I found out once I had the harness that the rear cam position sensors were 3 pin connectors and the avcs solenoid plug jackets were a little wider then the plugs on the harness.

I relayed that information to IA Performance and once they ask someone you working a lot with JDM motors. They said my motor was most likely a JDM EJ20X for either a 04-05 legacy gt or a 08+ wrx. Both jdm.

After doing some research, it seems the ej20x in the legacy gt's all had dual avcs(intake and exhaust). Mine doesn't. For tuning, I need to know if it is a ej20x with a 9.5:1 compression ratio.

Combined Facts:
EJ20
Single AVCS (Intake)
U20 Heads
Rear Cam Positioning Sensors - 3 pin
AVCS Solenoid Plugs Wider

Other Facts:
Third Coolant Bung in back of Driver Side Head
Casting Stamp in Block - 703
One Coolant-out to heater core line is in normal location and the other is in the middle of the flywheel flange.

This is all the differences I can remember at the moment. I would like to know if anyone can help me out.

One good question is are any of the JDM EJ20X motors single avcs, if so what model years and what is the compression ratio and any other differences internally compared to the usdm ej205. Thanks

It is a ej205 wrx jdm. It only had intake avcs. Not exhaust. Take a look at the turbo as well, its a td04-HL slightly better turbo then usdm, almost comes on parwith one of the vf series turbo. The heads are also big port heads, with tgv, the engine harness is the exact same as ours but with theintake avcs wire added. And yes jdm wrx had single avcs.

How do i know? I own the motor as well.

I only purchased the longblock. Just the shortblock with the heads and some coolant and oil tubes. Are your rear cam position sensors 3 pin or 2 pin. IA Performance said because of the pin difference that I will not be able to get the avcs working on a wrx.

That i dont know since im not running it. I didnt get the entire wiring harness or ecu. I am sure there is a way to get it working. May just be easier to take it to a tuner with experience on subaru to do it. If i ever want to run the avcs im just going to buy ecu with entire harness. Save me the trouble of repinning etc

If you need the jdm engine harness i can easily source you one.

the 703 casting series was found on 07-09 subaru wrx's and sti's IIRC, afterwards they went to the 704 series casting. Hope this is helpful.

I knew about the sti block casting numbera but I didn't know if the wrx ej20 blocks were numbered similarly.

Does anyone know anything about the 2008 JDM WRX (S-GT) motor. Do they have single avcs. I can't find any specifics on that car even on a google search. Thanks

Subscribed as I"m very interested to see what this motor is from too. The 3 pin rear cam position plugs are what threw me for a loop.

ToneWRX02- if you could check the rear cam sensors for 2 or 3 pins, and post the findings, that would be helpful. It may be easier to see the Driver (LEFT) side sensor versus passenger side.

After i get home from work il pop the hood and look, il try snapping a pic if its not too dark.

Idk why but i feel like they are two pinned.. I have the intake manifold and tumblers out so i can easily check both sides.

As you can see its two pinned, again This is a 01 JDM WRX engine (JDM Ej205)

Passenger Side

Driver Side

Also another note the cam Sensors are the same bewteen USDM and JDM, I had two engine harness again US and Japan version. They were exactly the same only thing that was different was it had extra wiring for the AVCS.

Other then that everything clicked right up.

I post some pictures of mine but my avcs solenoid plug is 90 degrees angled from yours and so is my cam position sensors. Your post definitely helped. Thanks

Fyi dude look at your injectors!! Wrx had light blue injectors both usdm and jdm.

Sti jdm are pink.

Now that color I have no clue what model had them.

So you have a v4/5 sti engine. Problem solved.

All Pre96 WRX and STi had 380cc injectors97/98 WRX and UK also had 380 injectors97/98 STI and 99> Classic all have 440cc injectors.97/98 STi with Yellow 440's are Phase 1.5 fuel rails that will fit Phase 1 rails.Phase 2 rails injectors from 99> will also fit Phase 1 rails but need 30 adaptors from Carl Davey, Zen or Lateral.

I bought my engine as a longblock. I put jdm sti pink injectors on my 05 usdm intake manifold and fuel system. So the turbo and all of the intake manifold stuff is from my 05 engine that broke.

Here are some more pictures of the motor in the car. Like I said, I bought a Longblock (shortblock + heads + some coolant tubes + timing belt assembly). I put jdm pink injectors on it. Orginally the light blues.

Does anyone know when the JDM EJ20 got/had the same single avcs system as 05-07 usdm EJ255/EJ257. As in the same style of avcs solenoid and the Hall Effect rear cam position sensors.

Did they ever phase the ej205 out in Japan for the ej20x/ej20y. A lot of sources say the jdm ej205 is still in wrx's over in japan. Thanks
