I can shed some light on this due to the fact I work at a Ford dealer. I drove 3 foci today, plus I've driven many before. I try to avoid driving them when I can because I feel they are unsafe due to the dual-clutch. When pulling out of the driveway at work, I need to plan it because the cars transmission has such a delay that if you don't plan it, you may get hit. This holds true with the Fiesta as well.

My dad just bought a Hyundai Veloster with the DCT and it is far better than Ford's version.

My other opinions on the Focus are that the dash is softer than the Impreza, radio is alittle better, and I like the hatch styling. The inside feels too cramped and the seat isn't near as comfortable as my Impreza.

The big thing is that the Impreza has AWD. You could probably find a Focus cheaper with the rebates and with the markups that they have. Leases are great on them too.

$2,000 less up front is nothing when the subaru will be worth 5,000 more than the ford in just 3 years.

But, I also re-ran the numbers, and given cheaper financing through Subaru, and $10 less a month in insurance, the Focus isn't as much cheaper in the long run as a I thought.
I don't expect Subaru to offer any deals on the Impreza next month when I pick mine up too. Why should they? They're selling all they can make? I'm just hoping they continue their current financing rates, they're slightly less than my credit union.

One thing that helped seal the deal for me was that I was able to get a good discount on the Impreza. I guess they need to do that if they're going to make you wait two months for the car.
In comparison, try getting a good deal on a Prius C right now. Same shortage of cars, but most buyers are lucky if they get the floor mats thrown in.

Yeah mine has all three heated options but here in Canada, there are only four trims with no packages or options like you Americans.

One thing to consider:

I was cross shopping multiple vehicles before laying down an order on an Impreza. I was originally quoted $625 every 6 for insurance for the Impreza (ended up actually being $535). The Focus was quoted @ $897

Damn you and your cheap insurance, even $897 for every 6 months is cheaper than ours here in BC. I bet it would be less than $897 for a STi to be insured.

Good point. My 2012 impreza is about 15% less each year than my 13 year old Honda coupe! That was a pleasant surprise to me.

If the focus were awd and the dash werent so gimmicky, I'd have bought one. I loved the first generation focuses (foci?). But the new ones are just too gimmicky for.me. Just my 2

I was torn inbetween the impreza, focus, and mazda 3 also.
I was originally dead set on the ford focus, but a testdrive i was kind of disappointed. The dual clutch was just, ew. It would sputter when you first hit the gas and then lag, it was just terrible. The back seat had ZERO room and the ford mytouch was very laggy and unresponsive. After researching them more online the transmissions already have issues and having to be replaced.
The mazda 3 was a great car. Fun to drive, good price, good looks, but dear lord the dashboard was complete crap. Hard plastics, circle AC vents (hate them, haha), and overall just ugly design.
The impreza seemed "plain" compared to the two, but that ended up being a blessing in disguise. the ford had too much technology for its own good and the mazda 3 was just too damn busy and cheap. the impreza had a very straight forward dash with amazing materials, great sporty looks on the outside, awd with good mpg, and probably the smoothest ride. the only gripe i really have with this car is the lack of hp, but i guess you have to sacrifice to get mpg which is fine.

I think they could have put the same 2.5fb from the Legacy in and it would have had that extra oomph and in the real world I doubt there would be much of a fuel mileage penalty. You really have to gramma drive this car to get good mpg's, which I usually do. But as soon as you get on it any the fuel mileage goes right out the window. True of any car. But considering how well the OB loaner with a 2.5fb did on gas when I had it, I feel like they should have left the 2.5 un-sleeved and let us have the same hp as the earlier gen, with a lighter, better chassis. Juat my 2
I still like my 2.0

That was the first thing that caught my attention when I sat inside the Focus... that is one ugly dash!

interesting that so many 12 impreza buyers also looked at a focus. the awd and subaru quality is why i had the impreza or crosstrek at the top of the list. the new mazda cx-5 has awd and i looked at that too, but it's 26000.

looked at the focus, scion xd, and prius c, honda fit...all better fuel mileage, but sticking with subaru. the prius c and mazda all have very long wait times just like the impreza.

I was looking at 2011 MY Impreza, 2012 MY Focus, 2011 MY Jetta Wagon TDI, 2012 MY Mazda SkyActiv 3 Hatch, and 2011 MY Fit. Was looking more for a Model year end deal and hadn't read up on the new Impreza.

The 2011 Impreza was taken off the list because I couldn't find any. The Jetta was taken off the list after reading the rate of HPFP failures. The Focus was taken off the list because of the Insurance rates. The Mazda 3 and the New Impreza were similar in price and insurance.

AWD and the fact that I had already owned a Subaru, and enjoyed it, won out over the 5mpg (esimates) I would have gained in the Mazda.

The insurance is $100 more a year on the Focus than the Impreza for me. $915 vs $818 for full coverage with, I think, $500 deductible. Might be $1k.

As for why only the Focus and the Impreza, it boils down to what I have locally for dealers, which is the big three and Subaru.

So after looking through it all again, the AWD is weighing in heavily as a good reason to get it. I'll make due with the crappy stereo until I figure out the proper upgrade path. That leaves wind noise as the biggest turn off...

didn't drive the ford focus because i knew the back seat was too cramped for my tastes based on rental of a recent model (2010?). i'm surprised that the focus is considered quieter than the impreza, but maybe it's the latest generation or perhaps i was driving over noisy roads in my rental.

while my impreza is not "lexus quiet" it certainly is as quiet as the Hyundai Elantra (which i test drove recently) and way quieter than the Nissan Versa (i know, less expensive car) that i had as a rental prior to the Impreza (my old car was in an accident)

i think the Honda Civic, Prius, and Prius C were all quieter than the Impreza, but the what the Impreza handled as well as it's safety and reliability record finalized my decision.

Mazda 3 was ruled out, as for others, due to cheap feeling instrumentation and cramped back seat.

Don't. I've been driving one as a rental while I wait for my Impreza to get here . . . it sucks.

It's not that comfortable, gas mileage isn't nearly as good as claimed.

Worst of all, the transmission is crap. CRAP. Worst auto trans I've ever driven. I wouldn't buy any Ford with a DCT until this thing is replaced.

My wife and I are the "married" type of car buyer. We make purchases for the long term and keep cars AT LEAST 5 years. That means excellent reliability, resale, maintenance are very high on the list. I care about running costs so good gas mileage is important. I like simple, robust, and reservedly handsome interiors. I schlep 2 small children around every day so I need space for car seats and stuff. I wanted heated leather, bluetooth phone, ipod, and a hatch.

The Focus was out based on reliability, interior space (rear seat simply won't work for us), interior design (have you SEEN the dash?? Barf!), auto trans is junk.
However, I LIKED the exterior design of the hatchback and the front seats were fine.

I bought a '12 Impreza Sport Limited. I love the comfortable leather seats (front AND back), integrated roof rails, dash layout, handling, and looks (the sport limited hatchback with the rails and gunmetal alloys, mmmmm nice ).

I actually prefer the dash in the Focus. A little more ergonomic. And the steering wheel controls are just amazing.

That said, after running all the numbers, the Subaru is cheaper (barely). Cheaper yet may be a 2010 Fusion, but it only saves about $700 a year, and will be out of warranty sooner...

This is figured assuming 25mpg from the Fusion and 30mpg from the Impreza, with gas at $4 a gallon, and 18,000 miles driven. Obviously as gas goes up, the savings margin diminishes.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out numbers on Fuelly, but there wasn't consistency on the numbers, and it's hard to figure out which engines/drivetrains were getting which mileages.

What type of driving do you guys do? I'm mostly rural, so a lot of 55mph long stretches with small sections of city driving.

Just talked to my insurance company on the price for insurance on a Fusion, and it's $737 a year. So about $80 less than the Impreza, and $170 less than a Focus.

Ugh, all the numbers make my head hurt....
