It's pretty much a self taught industry. There are classes, although I've heard from other tuners they are bare bones basic and don't provide knowledge worth the price tag.

Pick up these books, read them cover to cover if you have no knowledge about the science and tuning of a gasoline combustion engine.

Then it will be time to start tuning your own car. Don't be scared, tuning isn't some godly working that people make it out to be. Just remember, don't touch stuff if you don't fully understand what it does. Follow that rule and you won't run into any problems.

I started just this way almost 5 years ago now. I've put over 100k miles on my car since I started tuning it, and I've tuned maybe 10-15 of my friends cars, none of which have blown up

get your wallet out. or listen to theshark. most things you find are 2 day seminars which start from the very basic and lead you into a hands on tuning lesson for about an hour on a dyno

Most tuners Ive talked to who have taken that 101 class say its not worth 1/4 the money

I understand engines. I'm a 91B (wheeled vehicle mechanic) in the Army National Guard. I just don't know anything about open source tuning. Maybe you could help me out one day? I pick up pretty quick and I was great at math when I was going to school. Do you go to the meets?
