What up with the new car smell? Why is so magical? It's such a shame to lose it. Does anyone know how the dealer's/manufacturer's do it? I imagine it's some sort of chemical they clean the carpet and appolstry with.
Is there anyway to get something to make it smell like that again? Lord knows those new car air freshners just smell like some nasty soap or something!

I was told by my friends dad (who sells cars) that it *is* from the chemicals they use on the carpeting. It's probably so magical because it's killing our brain cells!

A professor I had in Materials Processing said that the "new car smell" is the result of a plastomer in the plastic of the dashboard. It evaporates due to heat and gets covered up by other smells. I really wish there was a product that you could spray on that would smell like that. I miss the new car smell.

Once upon a time, I bought a "new car spray" air freshener at an automotive supply store (Schucks). It was just a pump spray that smelled like new car.
Mine still smells like new car with almost 1700 miles on it and almost 5 weeks old. At least it doesn't give me a headache anymore. ![]() |

If you let your car sit for a few days with the windows UP of course, it's possible to get that new car smell for a few seconds when you get in your car. Then, you cry.

Its definitley from the plastics, all of the new parts give off that smell. Mine still has it, I've had it for over a month, but I fear that it is fading....
