Changing my timing belt assy, and have some concerns. First old timing belt setup had 2 different looking smooth pulleys, like so:
![]() This is what the new setup looks like (both smooth pulleys the same): ![]() Also, i'm not sure if all the notches are lined up correctly. I can't get the mark on the belt anywhere close to the crank gear, and the right (facing engine) gears don't look like they're lined up perfectly at the double notches, but seem to line up on the side notches of timing cover. Like so: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ::Continue to post #2 due to image limit::

![]() ![]() ![]() Any input? I haven't pulled the tensioner pin yet (still need to pull the belt back off and replace water pump) but I wanted to see if i'm doing something wrong here. Thanks. ![]() |

sometimes belt marks aren't spot on with pulley marks. but from your pics, you are there. make sure to put full tension on the idler pulley when you do let it out. then start it to see if you are indeed aligned properly. you will know if it's a tooth off, and will be able to redo it easily if so.

Maybe it's the angle of the picture, but the crank pulley in picture #3 looks off a tooth. It's not fully rotated to align with the mark on the block.

i think you have the wrong belt or youve installed it wrong. the mark at the crank gear should be a thicker line or possibly a series of dots instead of a line. then the other 2 marks in either direction should be a line at the top of each intake cam gear. be sure you compress the tensioner slowly, stick a pin in it, line everything up and when you think you have it lined up, press on the belt where the tensioner will be applying pressure, so you get an idea of where the belt will go once you release the tensioner, and see if the belt goes the right way. sometimes you have to set it up slightly out of time on the left-hand side, so when the tensioner is applied, it all goes into time perfectly.

I think I actually had the bed on backwards. Its also not an OE belt, so the lines i'm sure are a bit different. I ended up getting everything lined up, pulled the tensioner, did 2 full rotations, and all the pulleys lined up perfect, so i'm content.

its easy to leave the crank pulley bolt out, for picture verification(next time?) fyi! i had a belt that looked "wrong" like that, but it was lined up properly and ran fine. it's all in the pulley timing marks, the belt marks are irrelevent @ that point.
also waiting on the end result ![]() --keith |
