http://youtu.be/Rk3vGY7-og8
IMO driver capability won this race. The winner had to drive his a$5 off to stay ahead.

FRS? That's a GT-86.

Just watched that video - pretty cool.

I guess to account for different drivers, they could have rotated drivers through the different cars and averaged the times. Still a fun video!

The miata had a head start and finished 2 seconds back of the lead car, so roughly 1 second a lap slower. Though it seemed a mistake by the miata driver set up the first pass..

Better than a Miata on the track is not the benchmark I was hoping for.

The FT86's moderate output gives it only a slightly better power/weight ratio than the MX5. All along the premise of the FT86 has been a more practical, fixed-roof MX5 (or a cheaper, less powerful, 2+2 version of the Porche Cayman).

The results of these JDM video magazine battles usually aren't especially meaningful. They're meant to be less serious than a normal race, while providing some insightful comments about how the cars behave. Still, the 0-400 times in this related video are noteworthy:

At 90-95 MPH, it takes less than 0.06 sec to travel 7'8" (the difference between 400 meters and a 1/4 mile). So going by the video, the JDM 86 and BRZ should be able to do the 1/4 mile in 14.4-14.5 sec with a 3500 RPM launch.

But most USDM 1/4 mile magazine times so far are 14.8-14.9 sec. The weight difference between JDM (2712 pounds in the video) and USDM (2758-2776 pounds) isn't enough to account for that.

On a side note, most USDM 0-60 tests have been 6.2-6.3 sec (I haven't seen any JDM numbers).

That's too slow for a lot of you guys here, but plenty fast for my tastes. Even with the top up, my lowly '99 MX5 is more fun than any of my previous cars (despite my last three being significantly faster in a straight line).

Good analysis Deslock. I like the 0-400 video too!
The 6.2 -6.3 USDM 0- 60 times are pretty much what Subaru was predicting for the BRZ, and 14.4 - 14.5 for the quarter mile are pretty similar to the '02 bugeye wrx even without the awd launch advantage. So the car isn't slow by any means. You have to wring it out to get the most out of it speed wise, but like you are saying it's the driving dynamics that sets the BRZ apart. It's a different world of experience - a more deeply connected feeling with the car and the road. I have had friends who race whose favorite street car was the one they got to drive harder on the road everyday. It's why some Honda Fit owners love their cars, because they handle well, and they get to drive them hard. Most of us with our turbo cars cruise most of the time. With the BRZ there is a sweet spot of handling and power where you get to relish the whole experience of driving. It's really cool! ( I got to drive the BRZ as part of a Subaru video/photo shoot back in March. ) I was completely surprised at how amazing the BRZ is to drive - it's immersive, telepathic, and addictive! It's like driving in HD.

The last 1/3rd of the course (Motegi) was downhill.

Its a slow car.. not much point in setting it up against a real performance car.
