Default What grade fuel do you use in your 12 impreza?

My wife and I just bought a 12 impreza sport wagon and I was wondering what grade fuel everyone uses in their cars. The dealer says regular but I just wanted to make sure.

Most often you can get away with running lower than recomended octance and the general rule if it doesn't ping it's fine. If your car pings you can either move up a octane level or change gas stations.

Note that newer/busy gas stations will most likely deliver better quality gas than older/slow stations. The sad truth is that the longer fuel sits in the underground tanks sediment and contaminents increase significantly. Would you rather pump clean gas into your car or gas with contaminents? Also note that you should avoid fueling at stations the are getting or recently have gotten fuel pumped in. Try to allow at least an hour for the sediments that are mixed in the gas from the fuel being pumped in to settle before you fuel up. This will help ensure you get the gas you paid for rather than crud and will also decrease the possibility of plugging your fuel filters, and/or damaging your fuel pump and injectors.

87 is fine.
When its convenient, I do put ethanol-free 90 in but only because thats the only octane available locally for ethanol-free gas.

Regular (87) is fine. Some stations offer 89 for the same price as 87, other than that haven't fueled up with anything higher than that.

The manual, written by the manufacturer, says to use 87, so why wouldn't you trust that over an internet forum?

Anyone have a scanner that reads timing and knock retard?i am a little curious if there is a difference between 87/89/90 for timing advance three computer allows

I run 89. I tried 87 from both a busy Shell and Sunoco station I was getting some pinging and with 89 it is gone. The $1.50 extra per fill up is worth it to me.

87 octane...wish it were ethanol free but in my area, you only get something from 0-10% in the blend. :\

I only filled up once so far and used 87. Sinclair sells 89 at the same price (the one I go to at least) so I might try that too.

The manual says to use "at least" 87.

I used 89 for my first fill-up. 87 should be just fine, but for $.10 more per gallon, it's worth it to me to prevent any possible ping.

Using 85 here in Colorado. We can get away with that since we're at altitude. No knocking issues or anything. Can't help but want to use 87 anyway, but the dealers said this isn't necessary.

When I started driving gas was 89 cents per gallon for 87 octane, 99 for 89, and a buck nine for premium. Does anyone else wonder why its still roughly ten cents difference in grades, even though the price of gas has more than tripled?

I tried using E0 Premium again, now that it's warmer, and got my highest MPG yet: 33.6. Previous best was 32.5, and I'm typically mid-29's.

E0 regular is definitely the way to go if there's a station close to you that you can work into you're normal routine. For me, is a station right across the grocery store I go to.

People need to do a couple quick easy calculations to see if the cost is worth the increase in mpg. Especially if premium is the only E0 you have available.

For me, at this station, E0 87 octane is the same price as 87 octane at most other gas stations (with 1-2% ethanol), which is about 10 cents more than E10 89 octane on average. Premium is another 10-20 cents.

Say I get 26 mpg with E10 and 30 mpg with E0. If E10 is more than 13% cheaper than E0, I should get E10, otherwise E0 is worth it. So at 3.60 for E10, as long as E0 isn't more than 4.06, you're ahead with E0.

If my math is correct...lol =/

I suppose by those calculations, you would still even be ahead getting 91 octane E0 at 3.90.

E10 89 octane fill-up - 52.20
E0 87 octane fill-up - 53.65 - +2.7%
91 octane fill-up - 56.55 - +7.7%

E10 89 octane mpg - 26 mpg
E0 87 octane mpg - 30 mpg +13.3%
91 octane mpg - 30 mpg +13.3%

Am I crazy? Are all of those assumptions correct? I changed majors in college because of math =/ lol...

I thought people were crazy paying for premium, even if that was the only E0 available to them, but I guess it's worth it.

I had an afterthought...

Am I forgetting anything about cost per mile? You drive more miles on a tank of E0 than anything else...

Again, sorry for my horrible math, someone please help me out/correct me lol...

Thanks for the stats. Very helpful. While I can't buy E0 gas in my county, I can buy E0 premium traveling north. If premium E0 is 5 percent more and gives 13% better mileage, good deal.

Well, there's crap gas out there. If I had knocking after buying 87 gas, I would buy some Premium to "fix" the current tank, then avoid the station I bought crap gas from.

Just as important as the octane level is the quality of gas. The best quality gas is at stations on toptiergas.com. Top Tier Gas meets higher standards than the government standards.

I remember we had a rash of failed fuel injectors locally back around 2004ish. Lots of local press coverage trying to pinpoint it to a specific station or brand of gas, but it came from a lot of brands.

Thanks for posting that info and the web site. I was dissapointed to see that none of the gas brands local to me are listed on that site.
