Yes, disconnect the green test connectors before running the logger.

What you should do is the following:

Close everything on the computer
Plug in the test connectors
Plug in the tactrix to OBDII and USB
Open ECUFlash as Administrator (tight click, run as administrator)
Turn the key to ON
Read the current ROM (just to make sure communication is working)
Turn the key off
Close ECUFlash
Disconnect the green test connectors
Start the car, let it idle
Open RomRaider as Administrator (right click, run as Administrator)
Select the correct COM port
See what happens

The ECUFlash steps shouldn't be necessary long term, that's just to make sure communication is working before trying out the logger.

My Romraider under W7 only shows COM3 as well, but it works regardless of which port the Tactrix itself is bound to. Every laptop I've had it installed on is a little different, but two things seemed to make a difference:

1. Make sure you have the correct logger definitions (not ECU definitions) set up in Romraider logger. You won't connect to the ECU without it.

2. Try connecting via Learning View, and while that program is on, start RR and RR Logger. Sometimes that helps RR jump to the right (active) port, if port selection is the problem. You may have to mess with it a few times (unplug, plug in, open/close program in different orders).

This is what I have been doing. No luck, on none of the COM's. Cable does work with ECUFlash every time. I do have the current logger files and ecu files for RomRaider, I've researched everything I can think of. Uninstalled multiple times and tried reinstalling in everywhere people have talked about... most recent install is the one from what scoops04 posted. Someone wanna fly out here and get this figured out for me?

And you've told the RR logger where the definition file is right? Settings > Logger Definition Location

Installing RR is as simple as downloading the installer from here, downloading the ecu defs, car defs, and logger defs from here and here, extracting the defs and placing them somewhere, then launching RR and telling it where the defs are. I've installed it multiple times on multiple machines, XP and 7, and it's never been more difficult than this.

One thing I've read about, but never experienced myself, is that having multiple versions of Java installed on the machine can cause problems. You might want to try uninstalling RomRaider, go to the Control Panel > Add Remove Programs, and uninstall all instances of Java, then head here, download and install the latest version of Java, then reinstall RomRaider, and see what happens. If it works, turn off the Java auto-updater and never update it again.

Also, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? I've heard 64 can have issues, I've only ever tried it on 32.

I've set the logger location. Did the Java uninstall. I'm on 64bit. I'm serious, I've read every article I can come across about problems and done everything everyone else has... zero luck

Go ahead and download the Learning View utility. Try to connect this utility to the ECU. So, you'll isolate the problem: either this is COM port or the Romraider issue. If the Learning View will successfully connect to the ECU, that means that the cable and device drivers work well, and there's the Romraider issue.
The fact that the cable works with the Ecuflash is not indicative. As far as I understand, the Ecuflash does not utilize windows drivers, it connects to the Tactrix cable directly.
Good luck,

Have you tried the .zip file?

I think that's your problem. I have seen many, many posts about problems with 64-bit Win. I think when trying to debug the issue, that's where you should focus your searching. Since I have never tried to use Tactrix/RR on a 64-bit OS, I can't really help there, all I know is that setting up on a 32-bit OS is stupid easy.

I've been reading countless horror stories about getting RR to work with 64bit. I've tried all the methods I have come across. I'm about to give up and have Mikey/Phatboddi do an AP tune(was hoping to do open source to save a few bucks).

Good luck,
Just did this. Learning View recognized my vehicle/ECU. Awesome... guess that RR is being a pain in my arse.

RomRaider definitely has more trouble than Learning View or ECUFlash in connecting to a Tactrix/ECU. If you haven't already done so, the move to 32-bit Java is probably your next best bet, but I would try "piggybacking" the connection off Learning View to see if that helps.

Try uninstalling all java, then installing JDK from here, that's what I was using on Win7x64. Also reinstall RomRaider after that.

Technically JRE should work, but I never tried it.

Tried this as well. No luck.

Just installed the turbo and other parts, and I'm on a base map for 850cc... so car is far from tuned correctly. Need to datalog ASAP so I can get this car adjusted properly.

Oh. My. God.

RomRaider works. Successfully made my first log with my AEM UEGO and sent it to Mikey with Phatboddi. A hint.. Use Internet Explorer not Firefox.

Yes. I uninstalled everything for 36th time(Java, RR), restarted computer. Then opened 32bit IE and downloaded recommended Java from their website, then RR(didn't use the .zip). Installed everything and put in the logger and ecu files, and boom... RR worked just fine.

Looks like the issue is the 64 bit java framework.

It seems that the 'recommended' java page uses an auto-detection based on the browser architecture, so x64 Firefox will leave you SOL with RomRaider.

For future reference, anyone finding this page encountering the same might try grabbing the 32bit JRE here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/ja...ads/index.html

Yup, after going to RR's website to download the program for 142nd time, I noticed the mention about 32bit Java. That's what made me decide to try it, and obviously it all worked great. Just avoid using 64bit browser(IE or Firefox) to download Java and RR.

Well, I got my vag-com to work and was finally able to connect to the RomRaider logger!!! Having always been able to connect to ECUflash, Learningview, and ecuexplorer this was frustrating trying to work past!! I'm not sure what combination of uninstalling/installing of drivers did it, but thank God, it works. I ended up using the drivers included in ECUflash ver 1.32.1399. These are the drivers I had already been using but did not uninstall ALL the others drivers on the computer. Dumb. When I connected the cable after re-installing ECUflash, the computer never prompted me on finding new hardware...I thought that was weird. Anyway, under the device manager, it recognized it on com3. I connected the cable to my car and turned on the ignition. I opened Learningview(this always connected before and just wanted to double check) and it connected after clicking the connect button. Good.

Next, I opened RR and then the logger. I clicked the refresh/connect button and nothing. Same "unable to send ECU init" message. DARN. Just for kicks I opened the "logger definition location" to verify the .xml's were there. Upon opening, the file it was requesting to open was the "ecu_defs.xml". Should that be since the program is looking for the logger.xml? Anyway, I selected the logger.xml and clicked open. INSTANTLY it started connecting!!!!! I'm not sure how many people have had this issue but I've never read about this particular one. I've read about making sure the defs were in the right place and assigned as such, but not the logger...

I guess I must have skipped something despite doing it 10 times. I hope that this might help a few people out. Its just one more tiny detail that prevents things from working correctly.

Thanks for all of the help and trial and error from everyone!! I'll probably be posting more now that this is working to get feedback n such.

Awesome buddy! Phatboddi Mikey and I have been going back and forth every day now with e-tunes since I got RR working. I have had zero problems with RR or my AEM Wideband since I got it all working. Hopefully everything is smooth sailing for you too.

Or so i thought.... It connected and let me see and select parameters including the dashboard. All is well until i mash the skinny pedal....when i do that, rr logger freezes. I have no clue other than a cheap vag-com. Now what? Am i just out 16 bucks?
