Default 02 wrx a/c help

Went to lunch on wednesday and turned the a/c on and it started to blow out hot air. So i turned the a/c off let the car warm up and tried it again, same thing hot air. I checked the fuses, and they are still good. I'm not sure if it needs to be recharged or if the a/c compressor is bad. I don't hear it kick on when i turn the a/c on and i have no idea what it could be. Anyone with this problem and solutions will be greatly appreiciated since its starting to warm up.

Let your a/c run while you check the compressor. If it doesn't kick in or tries to kick in and barely spinning than your compressor clutch may be out. I had this problem last month and had to replace it. GL

Got to a shop and do a pressure test, if that fails they'll do a leak test. I thought my a/c was shot, turns out it it was just a bad o-ring and needed a recharge.

You're just checking to see if the compressor is spinning while your a/c is on. If its not than its out. Even if your o-ring is bad your compressor should still run. As for replacing the a/c clutch you won't be able to replace it. You will have to replace the whole compressor. Luckily I found a used compressor on eBay with only 30k miles on it for 75$ shipped.

If I remember correctly, the compressor has a self protection switch that will keep it from running without refrigerant since if it does it burn itself up. If you do have a leak, the compressor will not turn on or turn on only for a very short time and then cut out.

I let the car run with the a/c on but i don't hear the compressor kick on at all. I let it run for a couple of mins to see if it would kick on or anything but never did. I'm going to get a pressure test and a leak test done today to see if that's the problem. I will let y'all know what happens. Thanks again for the help.

Well i got the pressure test and leak test done today. and come to find out i have a leak. The mechanic filled it with refrigent and uv dye and ran the car for about 30 min and couldnt find the leak. I got to my cousin's house and walked by the car and heard a hissing nosie like something was leaking. looked around and found out where the leak is at. The condenser has a leak on the top left hand side right behind the radiator. Is there a way i can get the condeser fixed or would i need to buy a new one?

The odds of you finding a welder ballsy enough to weld your condensor is g_64:1. You will likely have to buy a new one and they are PRICEY, so try your damndest to get a used one. I got a used one from an STI for like a hundo and new I think they are like tree fiddy.

Yea it sounds like you probably hit something while driving and ruptured a fin in the condensor. I would look around online for a condensor rather than going straight to autozone unless it doesn't really matter to you. I put-in on google for an 02 wrx condensor and got this on one of the first search listings-http://www.genesisautoparts.com/product/con22017Xc0407a.htm Seems pretty decent at face value. I'm pretty sure subie has been using integral reciever driers on the condensors for a while and that one would fit you. I would shop around of course cause i'm sure theres a better offer somewhere than my first 5 second search on google Good luck my friend

thanks for the help guys. been a big help. i found out that it is not my condenser but the reciever drier has a pin hole leak. I remember that the original owner of the car said that he had not into a front end collision and "5 mph" and the reciever drier is pushed up against the radiator so i guess over time it made a pin hole leak. Is there a easy way of just changing out that one part or would it be best to get a new condesner? I check the the condenser and seems to be no damage execpt for it being pushed up against the radiator.

Early 2002's don't have a replaceable drier. It's part of the condenser.

Better check your production date before running out and buying anything lol

Yes sir, I had the exact same symptoms as the OP, and it turned out I was all out of refrigerant.
