Howdy all,

I just thought I'd introduce myself as I'll be moving back soon. Lived up there years ago with an Impreza OBS. Now it's just fun to have a little pep with the wrx. Do y'all ever do meets and such? I'll be making the drive from Chicago up to Anchorage in July and can't wait to be back in the area.

Hey Sam! I think we chatted sometime last year after I posted some pics on a thread around NASIOC. You mentioned you used to be up here.

Welcome back! We have a thread "Meets & Cruises" where people just post up their desires for quick meets. Otherwise sometimes we'll make a whole new thread for a larger meet like a cruise to Seward or such.

Install meets aren't nearly as common as they once were. People seem content to get in and get out when they do it themselves or with a friend or they just pay a shop to do it. No time for dilly dallying these days, I guess.

ANYWAYS, what year WRX do you have now?

Cue Davin! He drove up from Colorado (has a thread about it) to Fairbanks and is about to drive up a 11 WRX Limited hatch from the midwest within the next month after he moves down to Anchorage with his wife.

I haven't made that drive since July 2009 in my 08 FSXT from Park City, UT.

It'll be a blast!

Its a badass drive!!! Drove up from Eglin FL with a pit stop on CO for a few days April 2010. No recommendations on stops for the exception of where ever you like the view. BC is the best IMO throught Canada.

Where abouts around Chicago?

I just did the drive from Milwaukee area to Anchorage in March.

The drive is boring til around Regina then it's good the whole way.

Our stops were Minot, Nd, Edmonton, Fort Nelson Bc, then Haines Junction, yt.

Lmk if you want any info about the drive...

I'm in the western burbs out towards Naperville. I work for the National Weather Service and will be back up there with them in July. Back when I lived there - I did the drive from Anc to Juneau (via Tok to Haines and down) and loved the area around Haines. With my PCS - I have the option of going whatever route I want... so I haven't decided if I want to drive to Washington - ferry it up and then drive again - or go through ND and then NW through the heart of Canada. I'm definitely open to thoughts/suggestions for things to see along the way. With the drive/move being about 2 months out... I am just in the exploratory phase at this point. For y'all that did the drive through Canada - how far apart are gas stations - and for the premium sucking WRX's... is the octane high enough along the route or should I bring something to offset low octane gas??

Yukon Territory and a couple hundred miles northeast (?) of Tok does not carry even 90 octane. Once you get into Alaska it'll be 90 octane all day, every day. Just before getting to Alaska I found a station that had some octane boost just lying around, so I bought every bottle and filled up sparingly.

There are enough gas stations if you fill up after you reach 1/2 a tank.

If I could do it again, I'd just take the ferry. Less wear and tear on the vehicle, less miles, less danger of something unfavorable happening in the middle of nowhere. If you're looking for adventure, though, and want to say you've done the Alcan at least once, then it's an EXCELLENT adventure!

I don't know you enough to determine which is preferred, but you won't be wrong in whatever you choose.

I have family in Aurora actually...used to commute to chicago from there too one summer in College for my intership.

So pretty much everything you'll need to know. I just did the trip so things have changed a bit even from when I drove to Wisconsin in 2010. There is premium the whole way, even tok. The only place you will have an issue with the premium situation is between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake. The stretch is about 330 miles (if you fill to the brim you'll roll in with the gas light on, you're good). Besides that there isn't really any issues with gas stations any more.

If one station in town doesn't have premium the other one in town will (held true the whole way for us). As far as the importance of gas station selections go HUSKY in Canada has 94 Octane and 91 as a mid grade.

I personally would love to just do the drive every year, I love the bridges along the way in the yukon, love how the journey always has something random in store (in march a bison herd had us stuck at a turn off for an hour), just stuff that makes it worth while.

I personally like the sign forest in watson lake, and then the start of the highway in dawson, but really there is sooo much to see on the 3500 miles that makes it impossible to see it all...

What would the chances be of you having some extra cargo room?

That is good to know! I'm still figuring out the plan of attack - but I think I may actually go through South Dakota to visit family and then go north through Montana and then through Calgary.

I'm not sure how much extra space I'll have - as it will be me and my brother doing the drive in the scoob only. The good news is that I recently added a hovercraft mod to the car... let her ride nice and easy!! :P
