05 STI Fuel Filter

Another fuel filter thread, but.. I was just thinking, If it costs about $90 from the dealer for the fuel filter assembly, isn't there a way to just swap the "gauze" looking filter out with another one, rather than buying the entire thing? Also, are there any decent aftermarket alternatives?

You should be able to get the pod with filter for $60'ish online. Unfortunately, i don't think you can get just the filter insert.

Part number for my 04 was 42072FE020 so pretty sure your 05 is the same but double check.

Alternatively, some people remove the filter from the trunk and put on in the engine bay where the old style was. I thought about doing that but decided to just replace the in tank one.
