The absolutely cheapest way to do this is get the legacy keyless, one used legacy key, a new housing/blade, and one used old legacy teardrop fob. Swap the keyless units, make your all in one key by hacking the valet key for the transponder, and program the old used legacy teardrop for use with the other stock keys. When done you now have one cool key, a remote and key set, and a spare key. You could even sell your impress keyless unit and remotes on eBay..
Basically what I said

A word to the wise. Make sure you secure the transponder into the housing. Mine came loose inside the key while I was on vacation this weekend. The car wouldn't start half the time,or it would crank halfway then stop and sometimes wouldn't try at all. Kinda embarrassing, and I didn't have a spare or any tools

the new housing came in today... so I went from this:

To this:

Basically all it took was prying the legacy transmitter apart (4 little prongs) and removing the panic button (no resistance at all). I figure I don't use it anyway, so it's fine.

Thanks again Xluben. Most innovative mod evv44r.

Are you continuing to get more shells or is this a limited time thing?

I'm going to be getting more soon. I'll keep doing it as long as there's still interest.

Sweet! Got my Legacy (ebay) key today. I plan on getting a key cut for me as I don't have a dremmel. :-(

Has anyone attempted to have a Legacy style fob ordered with the same code as their original key fobs? It would be nice to have all fobs working without having to pair all of the different codes.

Sent you an Email. Those shells look damn sexy IMO. I'm going to mod one for my 05 Legacy. Pretty sure it will be just as easy to do if not a little cheaper to get my regular key cut compared to the usual $30+ to get your guys Laser keys cut.

Not possible. You need to program the code. Luckily it's easy and free. And the car holds five codes so the original remotes will still work.

Yep! Standard keys only cost a couple bucks to cut and can be done just about anywhere.

'2011 subaru legacy key'

and I always get the same results... is there something else I should be searching?
I had the most luck searching "Subaru Key Fob" and checking the FCC ID and the picture to make sure they matched. Just don't give up and make sure you go through all the pages of results looking closely at each image and description.

Got lucky and programmed the remote the first time. If anyone wants to get a laser cut key in the Northern Colorado area, I have a contact who will cut you one for $25.00.

Wondering if anyone else is having trouble programming their new key? I'm just using a legacy key, and got a new blank cut/swapped in my transponder. The key works great in the ignition and doors, but the remote doesn't work.

I Got my code, wrote it down (double and triple checked to make sure I have it written down right). Entered in the code on 3 different occasions(following the procedure), all 3 times the car did the confirm beep, and locked/unlocked the doors (which as I understand, means that it worked). Still no luck, the remote just doesn't do anything. Went out, bought 2 new batteries, tried that, still nothing... Anyone?

Also, if anyone went to the dealership to do it, was it a hassle? My dealership is run by complete morons, so that's kind of a last ditch effort... Help?

which 'confirm beep' are you talking about? It should make the same beep as when you use a normal remote to lock/unlock, not the beep that you get when you leave the key in the ignition/leave the lights on. The 'beep' should come from outside of the car.

After I programmed it, mine didn't do anything immediately. I sat there hitting button on the remote and finally it worked. I think it was after I pushed every button.

I actually gave up thinking it didn't work. Walked away in disgust and sat in the house. Came out 10 mins later to find all the buttons operating as they should. Weird.

Ahh yes didn't read that yeah pretty much.

I recently got an 09 Legacy key for $10 off EBay, just bid on it and waited for the auction to end. You can do this cheap if you are patient.

Seems like you can't beat that for a teardrop, those seem to go for at least $20.

If you've programmed the same code 3 times successfully, then you have probably lost one of your stock remotes, the memory holds 4 remotes, first in first out style, so now you have 3 of the same plus one of your stock ones. You can check that out and at least it will tell you if you are doing it right ;-) You could have the dealer program it (they just type the code in to the tool, much easier) to be sure, but really if you have the right code and got the confirmation lock/unlock you are doing it right.

Sounds like you got either a bum remote, or a wrong one. What blade style and FCCID if used? P/N if new?

The FCC ID on that $10 key does not match the one listed in the first post.

It's an 09 Legacy key for use on the older WRX's.

At work right now, the FCC is is right, factory remote still works. Going to mess around with it some more tonight. If not... Off to the dealer I go.

Tried this all again when I got home... Still nothing, the car gives me a confirmed beep with the lock/unlock, so it really seems like it should work. FCC ID is CWTWB1U811, just read it off the key. Blade type is the same as the 2011 WRX's, flat blade with cut out's on 4 edges. New battery.. Tried mashing all the buttons, tried pressing lock 10 times in a row.... Everything. I'm going to go to the dealership this weekend, and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll start looking for another used key... So frustrating. As a weird coincidence, after programming the new key for the 4th or 5th time, my original key fob didn't work... So I pressed the lock button a couple of times in a row, just to see. Then it started working again. Hmm... Strange. Anyways... If anyone has any insight as to something I may be overlooking... Get at me..

Out of curiosity.. does the dealer charge you for programming a remote for ya?

Or is it different for different dealers...
