I'm looking into this as well.
basically you are going to have to take the circuit board out of the compustar remote and trim and fit it into the housing, then hardwire that circuit board to the buttons off the legacy buttons to get them to function and control the compustar.

Its possible. I'm just unsure if the key housing itself is going to be big enough to fit the remote starter circuit board into it.

You can drop it off at Abbey Locksmith in Upper East Side in NYC. I deal with them on my residential construction projects but they just did my switchblade key last week. Make sure you tell them you only need the blank key laser cut and you will take care of the programming etc. GL

Well, I finally finished this mod and its awesome!

I followed the steps in Ben's posts and it was very easy.

I bought a blank Legacy key from Subarugenuineparts, and ended up having them cut the blank for me for 10 bucks.

I called every locksmith within a 10mile area and NONE of them would cpoy my key for me, even when I told them I just wanted it copied with no prgramming at all. Finally the last locksmith I called said 'The dealer can probably do this for you'.

Sure enough I called Chaplins parts dept and he said sure, but it would cost 10bucks.

Programming the fob to the car looks intimidating but its really easy.

NOTE for prgramming the FOB: In step 8 of the instructions, make sure you hit the 'unlock' button after you enter each digit just like step 6 states. You are basically going to enter the code twice following the exact same process.

My STI limited feels a little more special now

Great! Glad everyone is having good luck with it!

Are you local to Chaplin's? It's too bad all dealers won't do this...

Thanks I'll give that place a try.
Do you mind telling me how much they charged for the key cut?

Thanks

Hi- I'm not sure b/c they didn't charge me since I do a lot a work with them. Give them a call and see if they would give you a cost over the phone. BTW- I just programmed the new key tonite and voila! The detailed write-up seemed intimidating but I took a deep breath and less than a minute later, I had a big smile on my face

Glad everyone likes this!

FYI - On the ones I assemble, I do no install the Subaru decal on the back. This is in case you decide you would like to open it back up for some reason (as the decal is often damaged when removed). When you decide you're ready to install it, there is film on BOTH sides of the decal that can be removed. It's a bit hard to see/remove, but it's there.

had my work done at chaplins also! They know exactly what is going on and are great to work with. Had an interesting conversation with one of the guys. He said that he has tried to cut the blank that comes with the flip housing and has had zero luck getting them to actually work well with the transponder because the metal is different which causes the signal to change from the transponder. Stock Subaru keys are all steal according to him and aftermarket ones are mixed with softer metals. Has anyone else heard this or has anyone used the blank key that came with the flip key they got from xluben?

At the moment I'm just using the legacy key that i had them cut for me.

Most folks here have success cutting up their their master/valet/spare key and transplanting their transponder chip to the flip key shell.

But I haven't find anyone that address the following question that I have.

My question is, is there a transponder chip already built into the 2011 legacy key where the dealer can just program that along with the rest of the remote function to work with your car?

If the answer is yes, it would save me an extra step of destroying the key that I already have.

Thanks

The dealership can easily program the new transponder(just did it!). What they do is teach the car what transponder chips to trust. Getting the chip out of the legacy key is sometimes hard. I had to use a pocket knife or razor blade to wiggle it out.

Just received the Flip shell and the 2011 legacy remote from xluben today.
Thanks for hooking up again.

I was trying to program the remote but no luck with that. I followed the instruction to the dot. But I couldn't pass the first 3 steps to get the car to enter the 30sec beep. I've tried to get into programming mode for 30 min and no luck. All i get after flipping the key between lock and on for 10 times is the usually 5 to 6 beep that you get for leaving your keys in the ignition. and I've turn that key pretty damn fast.

Anyone else having problem?

Are you pressing the buttons on the car or the remote? You should be using the car ONLY. Don't use the remote at all for programming.

I use the original fab remote to unlock the car to enter.
But other than that, I'm just turning the key. Not pressing any button.

Oh, you're on that step. You have to flip it very fast. I am almost sure that's your issue. Turn it back and forth as fast as you can!

I try reactivating the factoy alarm. But i wasn't able to do that neither.

I'm not sure what to tell you other than when I did it I had to do it much faster than I expected. It pretty much felt like I was doing it as fast as possible.

Bough the legacy key today from Schaller Subaru Berlin CT and they cut it for me. Came home follow the instructions to program it,Bam works first time. Now need to order the flip key from xluben and transfer everything. I asked Scheller parts if they can cut the flip key when I get it and they said sure. Any of you guys from CT need help call Scheller Subaru and ask for Alfredo super helpful guy.

Hey I have a 2012 Outback, Ben are you making keys for people? I am new here but frequent the Subaru Outback forum often and today found this glorious place that looks like I will be on more often. I'd love to have a key made.

Let me know!

I'm planning to get the blade key that came off the flip shell cut by a locksmith. Can the blank key blade be laser cut by the locksmith without removing the swivel part? I'm just seeing if I can save a step of hammering the pin off the unit.

Depends on the machine, but they should be able to.

Sorry if this has been asked, but if I ordered a Legacy key from the dealer, in theory would they be able to program it and cut it for me, leaving me with only having to swap it over to the flip housing?

I'm just too damn lazy to do all the programming . . .
