Ok I made a mistake I bought a automatic wrx and I'm regretting it everyday. I'm thinking about changing over to a 5 speed or 6 speed. What's involved and how much would it cost. What's the best way to get the parts. Do I have to wait till someone totals there rex to pick up the parts right. All real motorheads may reply.

By far the cheapest and best way is to sell the automatic car and buy one with a 5 speed. Plus it will still be under warranty, and so forth.

I agree with Alan and Subie Gal. Just take any mods that you already have and transfer them to a 5spd.

kaboom now I got a car that can go 30 -120 like a rocket, But somegrandma blew me away for the first 20 yards at the red light. I got my exhaust and intake making all this noise and I look like a fool as grandma blows my doos off.

The 5 speed doesn't always help in that sense. I was driving Keith's 5 spd WRX today and a guy in a new Buick Regal wanted to race. He totally took me off the line (although I didn't drop the clutch) & was pulling away from me even after the boost kicked in. We then lined up at another stoplight and it was even worse.
To make things worse, not only was he driving a Buick, but he had his cute little daughter in a carseat in the back, and she waved at me as they took off! ![]() |

i feel like a saturn or something when i first take off. i was racing a prelude and it killed me off the line, but i caught back up and passed when the boost came into effect. i was thinking about reving it to 3 in neutral and slamming it into drive, then thought better of it and settled on the lag

If you hadn't thought better of it, your name probably would've been quite appropriate.

Your going to take a pretty big $$ hit no matter which way you try to go about this. You will likely get around 2000 under invoice for your WRX at a dealer. Sell it outright if you can, or hold on to it and wait for an STI with a 6 speed, since thats what most of us would really like. In any case people need to be very careful about this. The WRX is such a "hot" car right now and they are selling fairly well, that sales guys are going to be pushing you into the one that is "on the floor." You will later regret this. Hold out for the one you want, because once you make the mistake, it is going to be hard to put it right. I could have driven a very nice Auto off the lot almost 2 months ago, but I would not have been happy with it in the long term. Now in about 12 days i should have the one i ordered. It has been a long wait, and its even worse now that its almost over, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Brake-stand/Torque Brake!!! Just do it. If anyone doesn't know what this, I'm sure some of the lovely people on this board will explain.

One lovely person comming up.........
A Brake Stand is a really simple way to get the most out of your automatic off the line. While stopped, put your left foot on the brake, and hold it there. When the light turns green, hit the gas with your right foot and rev the engine up to around 3k then let your left foot off of the brake and off you go. The first time I did this, my head-snapped back and it was awesome. Although this isn't as bad as "rev in N and shift to D," don't do this too much, because you do run a chance of over-heating the tranny fliud and causing some damge over time. Never-the-less have fun. -Mike- |

When I bought this car I thought I'd be blazing off the line. "0-60" in 6.2 sec or some **** was in the magazine article that got me all hype. I thought I'd launch the way I do In my supercharged M3. Because both cars have forced induction but it's not the case. The only time the M3 move slowly is when the wheels brake free which happens every time I launch over 2500 rpm. I had a Saab 900 turbo swore never to buy another and now I 'm back to lag city. Maybe G*D just wants me to slow down.

Every van, SUV, and luxury sedan beats me for the first 20 yards at a stoplight.
They never rev their engine to let me know they want to race me. So I never have the chance to pre-spool my TD04. Oh well, I guess I'll still have the original clutch when I sell my car in 2 years. |

Wonko, maybe the car really does perform better after 1500 miles I fail to see how that is possible, I really don't believe this whole breakin ****, but I will know in another 300 or so anyway. Maybe it's that I'm comparing it to an extremely fast puppy I don't know. What I do know is some "old lady" in a camry took me at a light and I was ready to go straight to the dealer and demand my money back.

Hmmm. I don't know trade it on a RS automatic. I have one and have never lost to a V6 camry. I have however been smoked by a WRX, but he didn't catch me until halfway through second gear. He didn't launch his car, I did a 2300 rpm brake stand.

I don't understand how you guys got such slow cars. My WRX is an auto, and after a nice easy break-in and 1650 miles, it just plain rockets off the line, even without torque braking. I mean, there's a split-second of lag, but then the turbo kicks in and it's everything I can do to keep my head up and hands on the wheel.
After seeing the responses of other auto drivers who seem to have really slow cars, I'm starting to wonder if maybe there's a bit of a performance difference between individual WRXs. I'm really not exaggerating at all when I say my auto WRX is a rocket. I can't imagine anyone calling that performance slow... |

Credit, have you checked into getting a higher stall converter for the tranny? Just give it some time, I am checking on different options. I have a friend that rebuilds trannys (not sure on import stuff), and I am waiting to hear back from him. I know he does custom tourqe converters for domestic stuff. We just need to wait it out a little bit.

XTC,
How are you driving it? I can smoke a stock Camery with my Intrepid. There has to be an issue with your driving style or particular car. If my Intrepid (WRX on order baby!) can do 0-60 in 9.4 seconds. You figure 10 or more for a V4 Camery. You can even shift the automatic to some extent. Drop it down to second gear and you should be able to hit 4 rpm easily abd blow most things off the line withen 2-3 seconds. Could the problem be your turbo never engaging since the WRX is a DOG under 2500 RPM. |

Two things...
If you are experiencing turbo lag, LEARN TO DOWNSHIFT (autos excepted). If you are having problems launching ... well duh, the WRX is NOT a drag race car. Take it to the track / course and do some real racing. |
