I have one and had one on my last wrx, but several times I have had the plastic handle break. I know that I can order a new assembly from Japan parts but that take awhile and is nto cheap. I fear that eventually that will be a no longer available part.
Anybody else had the problem? thinking I might have it 3-d modeled and printed or machine.

the first one broke right where the bottom pin goes to the pivot it started to crack so I safety wired it and ordered a new one. The second one broke where the internal spring sticks in place.
just cheap ABS plastic |

I suppose if you can disassemble the main portion of the handle you could make a mold with silicone and keep making castings as you need them.

Well I have found a guy who is 3D modeling it so I am gonna have one 3D printed. I have the parts from two spares that have already failed.

I also have this problem along the pivot point. I've thought about retrofitting a metal sheath around the pin and structurally reinforcing the sheath with some kind of super duper crazy clue in a mold and making it all black. Sounds high end huh lol
![]() I would be down for buying a quality replacement part. |

each one took about 2 years, maybe less?
it is just cheap ABS plastic. I am just worried about subaru stopping making them. just have to wonder how much a CNCed one would run. |

Maybe it's time to get some numbers together for a group buy.

So we can either use an online company like Shapeways or someone can go local.
First are foremost, for anyone who's done this before - in a group buy scenario would we be responsible for providing the 3D CAD design for the piece to be replicated, or can we simply send in a part for replication? |

maybe you could make a mold and then make it out of CF/fiberglass/kevlar?

That would look cool, but I really wonder if it'd be strong enough..

Yesterday afternoon the first shapeways 3D printed prototype arrived.
it looks good and the dimensions are right. Gonna install it tonight. Here are the pics, the factory handle has super glue on it when it was put back together. the color is very matte black so contrast is bad ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I like how the new handle is significantly thicker in areas where the stock latch is prone to cracking. Can't wait to see updates on functionality!
If this works well and/or we're able to get someone to CNC this out of metal, I am so down ![]() |
