I have/had too. But I despise american cars and the japanese market is imo heading downhill.
This all my extremely biased opinion, of course.
I've been reading up on late model Volvos and Coopers. Audis are nice but a bit too fancy looking and the Audi/VW connection is there...

Ive read good things about newer Mazdas but they just look too jouvenile for my tastes. I've never trusted Mazdas either. My friends Protege has been terrible.

As long as we're discussing brand options, I'll pull up this chart once again:

From a reliability perspective, Mazda is excellent. And Volvo is the most reliable European brand, but still pales in comparison to the Japanese brands.

If I was willing to throw a lot of practicality out of the window, and buy a car that would be both fun and reliable, I'd consider the Subaru BRZ, or the 2013 Honda Accord coupe with the 6-cylinder engine and 6-speed manual tranny.

I've had good luck mechanically with Mazdas, but the thing that worries me is rust. Proteges have a rust problem here in MN where cars of similar age have no signs. They ALL rust in the rear quarter panel behind the wheel. I don't like the look of the Mazda3, but the CX5 looks sharp. Just don't know if they've figured out the rust thing yet and don't like to reward a company that can't figure out something basic like that.

I've never had an issue with any of my Hondas, then again, they've all been manual. I trust Honda, but they don't make a Civic hatchback and the Fit is too small.

I trust Toyota too, but they don't make anything I like.

Hyundai/Kia are interesting to me. My wife's Kia has been really good. I'd give them a try. I really like the Hyundai Elantra GT, that was my second choice vs the Impreza. The interior is sharp.

I wouldn't even think about trading the Impreza, even an oil burning Impreza, on something European though.

I currently have a rental Tucson 2013 with 2k on the clock. DON'T do it shifter leather is peeling the entire leather is cheap junk drives very squirmy radio shorts out when you turn up volume cvt is real real bland. Like all Hyundai Kia the body parts do not match gaps by the headlight this is my 4th Hyundai Kia rental I have driven the soul sport age optimo. As for Hondas mine had bigger issues than burning oil which is considered minor to the tranny crapping out on you the engine getting cracked 3 rd gear not engaging leaving you sol when merging or Mazda clutch going real early 15 to 18k early Mazda tranny issue. My mini aka BMW mushroomed struts overheating and engine fire. 8k to replace tranny which dies at 15k. Or Nissan and their early cvt issues or Nissan less than stellar mtl which shifts like garbage or toyota oh Toyota where do we start. Yep every car has issues pick the one with the least severe issue my 2 cents

The chart and automotive ratings mean little to me at this point.
I bought a highly acclaimed car and I'm not satisfied with it.

I wouldnt have even bought a nee car but this one was too enticing to pass up. There really isnt anything out there I'd care to pay or owe 20k on.

But I am considering my other options.

Elantra GT, Kia Soul?

Civic Si? A little over $20K, and they do burn oil though.

I'd not want to owe money on anything korean.
I'm thinking of going with a used car worth a little less than my Impreza to minimize the financial loss.
There are lots of Cooper S mt's for under 20.

My parents are also looking for something similar.

They all look to me for advice on car buying, and I hate to not be able to recommend the new Forester because I really like it, but adding oil, even if it's normal, won't fly with the wife or parents on a new car.
I think it is quite the minority that uses an exceptional amount of oil. Ours has a couple thousand miles after the first oil change, and it still shows a quart high - which means a couple of things - one, it's not using oil, and two, the dealer mechanics overfilled it. The only reason they would have overfilled it is to compensate for the heavy use of some of their cars. It's not like they're giving away extra oil for free because they're nice guys.

I would go for a 5 speed Crosstrek if I had it to do over again.

Overfilling is a common theme here.

If Subaru had a new "rs" with a 175-200hp engine that doesnt burn oil, and a proper six speed, maybe I'll own another... But I really cant see buying a Sube if I had it to do over again. I should have bought another used car.
Everyone I know has had really good experiences with their Mercedes. The old man down the road and I talk cars a lot. 20ish will buy a decent used Benz.

My friend Johns dad does 110 mph down the turnpike A LOT and his 94 Benz has 350,000+ miles on it. He's spent some money on repairs and maintenance but nothing major. He's not even a meticulous person when it comes to upkeep. His wife's 2000-ish slk has well over a hundred and the only thing that has broken is the stereo head unit.
I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for a clean used Volvos and Mercedes. Not saying I'm gonna take the hit and trade. But it is a consideration. I don't want to keep racking up oil burning miles and further depreciate this thing.
In the meantime, I'm going to ckean the carbs on my ZRX1200 and do a few oter things to get it back on the road.
Summer is coming and the bike will help keep the mileage down.

I don't know, seems you're on a budget, and what you end up doing is dependent upon your tax filing, I'd think long and hard about a used Benz.

You say your friend has spent "some" money on his 350K mile Benz, it'd be interesting to know how much "some" is.

I have a friend that just dumped an Audi S4 with 130K miles because he's spent the equivalent of a new compact car in repairs in the duration of ownership and he's had enough. I wouldn't have lasted that long, would've been gone after the warranty was up. IMO, you lease euro cars, you don't buy them.

Well I'm just THINKING about the other options out there. A clean used benz isnt an aweful buy. The original owner takes a huge hit, but on the used market the prices are more reasonable.

My friends dad has spent a good 5-6k on repairs. But thats since 94, man.
My neighbor's 280 has 170k doesnt burn a drop of oil and hasnt cost him any more on upkeep than many other cars. I maintain my cars very well.

I''m just starting to think that if I'm gonna owe 20 or 25 large and have to meticulously maintain the car, it may as well have a benz emblem.
They are sorta snooty type cars, but EVERYONE I know with one keeps it for many many years. Same with Volvos.

I basically want a car that doesnt burn oil, and that I can drive for ten years.

Our receptionist bought a 190 WAAAY long ago and drives the piss out of it and it still looks pretty new for its age.

And while I am "on a budget" and pretty frugal, I'm by no means poor or unable to buy a more upscale car. I just would rather keep investing my money in things that will return a profit, so I'm cheap, but dont mind paying for quality.

An informative read. Take into account first year depreciation, as the last couple paragraphs explain. "if you plan on keeping it or buy it used, the cost to own and operate a mercedes isnt really much different than a non-premiuim car."
I've noticed Volvos and Benzes a couple years old that werent out of reach financially.

But enough for now, I'm waiting to see what summer brings, and then I'll make a determination.

Not sure why Zeeper keeps following this thread when he clealy is biased against "the oil consuming consiracy"...but whatever. He should just ignore this entire thread to be honest.

I wonder that if under warranty you don't refill your oil until your oil change is up.....how long the engine would last?
Where does it say you are responsible for the oil staying in the engine? Just being stupid, I know...but they think we are anyhow, don't they?

We have 80k+ on our 2007 2.5i and it runs great. I'm mad that I don't even like the new Imprezas anymore regardless of the fact they may/may not burn oil. I like having AWD but seeing as that in Florida you don't really NEED it...I'm wondering what car I would like if I had to choose right now...coming up pretty clueless.

I did want a BRZ...but that has the oil burner engine no? Maybe a used Genesis Coupe? Ehh.... 350Z? Not sure...
