^^ Yeah. And my sympathy for 79 is largely due to my 2010 VW Golf TDI woes.

So I just wanted to give a final update on my 0W30 experiment. I didn't seem to help oil consumption one bit and it seems to have hurt my fuel economy slightly. Ran it for 5k miles and changed back to Amsoil OE 0W20 today.

I was told by a Suby tech, and it say in the owner's manual, that its ok to top off with a conventional 5W30 or 5W40. I'm just going to buy a cheap 5 quart jug of 5W30 and use that, instead of my Amsoil, as a top off oil from now on.

Isn't bad to mix different types of motor oils?

Yeah I've always been told not to unless an emergency. I certainly wouldn't mix cheap conventional with premium synthetic either.

From the Amsoil web site:

COMPATIBILITY
AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is compatible with other conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oilís life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils.

If youre burning it at the rate Jrobb is, shortening oil life isnt as much a concearn, as fresh new quarts are regularly put in.

It can be a problem mixing two dino oils together, but Amsoil will mix with anything.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking. Also, if Subaru says it's ok to do, then why not? I change my oil every 5k miles anyway.

Honestly, I plan to get rid of this car in a couple more years at the most. I'm not overly concerned that mixing oils may slightly lessen the life expectancy of my engine.

Have you checked the compression?

No, I haven't. My dealership refuses to even do a consumption test on my car. I don't know exactly what's involved in a compression test or how much it costs, but I refuse to spend the money to get it done. I feel Subaru should do it or foot the bill, but that's not going to happen.

Deal with SOA then. Contact the Customer Dealer Services folks and open up a file with them. They should have a representative contact you. Tell them you are consuming large amounts of oil and the local dealership refuses to do a consumption test. You'll see some action.

A leak-down test would be better than a compression test.

I ran a 94 jeep cherokee (I know it's not a Subie, BUT) to 470,000km (292,000 miles) and purposely mixed in every synthetic oil I could find. Partially as an experiment (that vehicle didn't owe me a penny) and partially to prove my brother wrong.

The only issue I had in almost 300k miles, was forgetting to put the oil cap back on once. I drove a half block, remembered, and found it still sitting on my rad shroud.

I wouldn't mix synthetic with anything less than, but I can't see it (or have ever felt it) hurting an engine when mixing synthetic's. I'd LOVE to see some science prove me wrong or right.

Man, my 89 Cherokee with the 4.0 went 389,000+++ before I gave it to a friend. Who is STILL driving it with the original engine.
Never ever did it burn any oil.

Did your oil level light come on? Or based on reading the dipstick?

So I took my car in for the 15k mile oil change. I told them that both oil lights had been coming on and that a month ago a .5 qt was added by another dealer.

They soldered some wire on permanently which made the red light go out. The tech doing the oil change told the service advisor that it was .5 at low.

Looks like I'm still losing oil.
