We always came back south when the cold weather came in though...
I'm not into snow at all.

Very open areas where I was compared to heading into downtown Chicago though....scary. Although Miami looks kinda sketchy from the highway too. A city I've never been too and I'm in south florida near West Palm.

It's not so out of the question that the Crosstrek would have FB issues. That engine is cursed. I had a bad feeling about it even before the oil loss post....just didn't trust it. I always felt like they were making a cheaper car and selling it for the same amount or even slightly above the 07 we bought. Smaller engine, check....took away the RIMS only...put on the old hubcaps, check.....creaky seats...check.... I don't like that fact that it went from 170 HP to around 130+ just in my head...don't like it.

growing up in Florida, dad taught us NEVER to go to Miami. South Florida is beautiful, but the locale are very sketchy. I went to Miami to go on a cruise, and man, was I ever comforted to know we had two guns in the car! Can't afford yourself that same level of protection in Chicago.

Out of curiosity, I googled the Glasgow murder rate. People in the US probably don't know about it because there are dozens of US cities that are worse.

So, exactly 999 miles after my last oil change, my oil light has come on. It usually doesn't come on until at least 1200 after a change or top off.

Haven't had a chance to check the level yet, but it's usually down close to 3/4 quart when the light comes on.

Might be on track for a new short block...

I hate that this is the remedy.

Who wants major surgery done to their new car? On top of that, who wants a cobbled together engine?

If engine replacement is the only way, forget the stupid short block.

Quit being cheap asses Subaru and give people the entire engine assembly to minimize time in the shop, installation/assembly error and further headaches for the owner.

Congrats on your new Impreza! If you bring it to the dealership they will tell you that it is "acceptable" to burn 1quart for every 1200 miles. So depends on how much oil you've went through. Hope this helps

Did you drive any different? My oil light came on 1204 miles after the last top off

Man, they are coming out of the woodwork now.

And congrats on getting the rims. Once you get rims going back to hubs is just "gross".

I can't imagine an oil light after 999 miles.....yikes. I wouldn't even worry about 4000 miles....but thinking about having to put in oil long before you need an oil change is just annoying as hello operator.

Well there are very distinct differences. In America, the bad areas are visually pretty easy to avoid. And you're also in a car in America vs on foot in Europe.
I'm not here just to bash Glasgow, Glaswegians do a fine enough job of that on their own.
Just lamenting having to spend the money to go stay in the housing projects of Glasgow and being stuck fighting with this car even longer.

Agreed. And yeah, they are coming out of the woodwork!
As evidenced by the forester, brz/frs, and Crosstrek, they havent figured out the issue, or would rather spend the money to fix cars on more ads.

Well, I checked my oil on Monday and noticed it was about 1/4" - 1/3" below the top notch, so I topped it off with a spare can I had in my trunk. Doesn't seem like a lot in about the 4000 miles since I did my oil change, but is something that bears watching I guess.

Side note question for you guys: how do you measure out the .3 quart when doing an oil change? Do you just eye ball it on the liter oil can, or do you using a measuring cup to measure it?

Eyeball it. techs pour in 6 +/- quarts so its not rocket science. I have even just used an even 5 quarts which puts my level right at the top (full) mark.

I just dont like the thought of carrying (possibly opened) quarts of oil in the car. "doing your part" means doing this though.
Not something someone would expect from such a highly acclaimed car in 2012-13.

Can? The only oil I use that comes in a metal can goes in my airplane.

For the car I just add 5 full quarts, then 10 ounces out of the 6th. Leaves me with 22 ounces left and very easy to see/measure, no measuring cup required

Plastic bottle, then?

Thanks for the responses guys, the reason I asked was that it seemed I had to add more oil than the 5.3 qts last time I did an oil change to get it close to the full line.

.3 quarts is approximately 10 ounces. Easy when you have oz measurements on the bottle.

So Jrobb- youre burning enough, keep us posted. At the very least now, you should be getting a new shortblock.
Although I agree with others that whole engines would be much better for peace of mind.

hmmmm... I dont think its working.
It says at the bottom left - "you may not post attachments"

Is that because of my gasoline-on-subaru sticker??
