Default First oil change

hi everyone,

i just completed my first oil change on my Impreza at 2689miles on the odometer, and as promised am reporting back on my experiences.

1. Jack or no jack or ramps
after realizing that this car has the same problem as my wife's prius with minimal clearance that allows a complete loosening of the drain plug with a pan underneath, i decided to drive up onto a couple of 2x4's. the extra 1 5/8" made a big difference and the change was really easy. (i don't own ramps, and if this didn't work, i would have used my jack and jackstands)

2. oil color
after nearly 2700mi, the oil was very dark. i can't say it was dirty, but it had enough carbon to have a very dark appearance.

3. dipstick prior to change:
read right near the full mark or maybe 1/16" under the full mark. contrary to what others have experienced, there wasn't an appreciable difference in reading either side of the dipstick.

4. 5 qts of oil reading:
after adding a full 5 quart container of Mobil 1 Fuel economy full synthetic 0w20, and letting the car run to fill thew new filter, the dipstick came up to the midpoint between the two marks.

5. 5.3 qt reading:
i then added ~0.3qts (11 ounces out of a 32 oz quart container), and the dipstick came up to the full dot on both sides.

my car's build date is Feb 2012, by the way, so i wonder if the dipstick and tube are different on my car vs others? i checked the dipstick multiple times for both pre change and post change and it was consistent on both sides of the dipstick.

other notes:
- i can't believe how thin this oil is. it drained out of the pan really fast. much faster than i'm used to with 5w30 oil on my old honda or my wife's prius. i was suprised that a slight shift in grade would have a perceptible difference.
- the new oil seems even thinner than what i drained as evidenced by the way it coated the dipstick. i'll be curious if that will change as i put miles on this batch of oil. this is definitely something i'll be keeping an eye on.

I thought you were done with this thread Zeeper? I don't share your view of high speed driving.

Funny thing about this dealership experience is that I didn't do or say anything differently than I did at B Bryan. the difference is that today I went to a REAL service department.

Just checked my oil level today. Its been 1000 miles since my first oil change @ 3000 miles (was 1 quart + low) and I'm approximately a half quart down. Starting to get a bit concened now. Guess its time to visit the dealership.

Thanks for the update nubsub, I think there may have been a dipstick/tube change as mine reads a good bit above the full mark when I put in exactlyt 5.3 quarts with a new filter.

Same here. Mine was built in Feb. Have to ask the dealer about it when I bring the car in.

Sounds like my first 5-6k miles.
October 2011 is my build date. I'm hoping my next 6k are the same.

If they're the dipsticks from the 2.5's being used into this model year, it could make sense that the sticks would read overfull in a 2.0, right? Later builds don't have the overfill indication on their sticks because they were accurately designed for the 2.0's. My guess, but I don't really understand the physics of amt. of oil and displacement between engine sizes. Also the discrepancy between sides of the dipsticks in the models that read overfull when properly filled may have something to do with that too. I'd love to see a side-by-side of the two sticks: the ones that read overfull next to the ones that are accurate. Maybe the stick tube is inserted deeper into the engine then on the later models: ie. the 2.0 tubes and sticks are shorter and able to be mounted accurately. Has me curious, anyway, and would go a long way to explaining some owners' confusion about fill levels, and the grief that has resulted (including dealerships unintentionally underfilling because of stick readings, which could be a BIG problem down the line when engines start f'ing off from not having enough lubrication.

But the 2.0 was released last year in Japan i think, so you would think they had enough dipsticks when they started to produce these

Just did my first oil change at 1,300.

Pre oil change my dipstick read just over the full mark. After the drain, I filled with 5.3 qts and I'm right back to just over the full indicator.

It definitely looks like it's over filled.

how much is "just over"?

i would say that mine could be a smidge over the full mark, but maybe a max of 1/16"?

if i recall, 79's was like a 1/4" or more overfilled the time he went to the dealer.

that's quite a bit...

i don't think mine was that much. i did notice "wicking" that is higher than the full mark, but the "broad oil mark" is definitely just a smidge above the full line. maybe i'll measure mine next weekend.

No news is good news I guess. Still enjoying the 2012 outback loaner.

I have the damn squeaky seat now! Between the oil consumption, multiple dash rattles and now a squeaky driver's seat, I'm getting frustrated with this car real quick. Haven't been posting my frustrations as much as 79, but I'm right there with you man. Hope I don't have as many problems with the dealership as you when I bring it in.

I've got the dash rattles. Are yours intermittent or persistent. Please keep us posted on your experiences with the dealer and maybe report to us in the rattles thread.

Sorry to hear about your other troubles, too. Hope your dealer is responsive.

But, if one reads the thread, it is clear there are two different dipsticks available on our cars, possibly based on build dates. And I agree there shouldn't be two different dipsticks. But there are. I'm merely suggesting there may be a connection, and it may be relevant to the discussion. It is curious that they should have had a stock of 2.0 dipsticks, so why the two different dipsticks?

Seriously someone posted a quick DIY fix in a thread. It's the top two hooks in the seat back assembly: they lose their buffers and start rubbing. Sounded like a twenty minute fix...

I started to tear apart my seat, but stopped for fear that if I didn't fix it or get it together right, the dealer and/or soa could argue that my monkeying around with the seat was the cause. Its under warranty, let the dealer fix it and enjoy the loaner car. I think one of the springs in my seat was/is broken, as the backrest has a deep valley between the shoulders, and I can feel a spring popping in some way in the backrest when cornering twisating in the seat.
I think Mastro is actually fixing it, as I've had this Outback since saturday and still haven't heard from them.
Every time Bill Bryan had my car, they called me early the next day to say they "couldn't replicate the problem(s)".
I still can't get over the mpg's I'm getting with the OB. Virtually the same as when I granny-drive my 2.0.

Which OB did Mastro give you? The 4-cylinder with the CVT, or the 6-cylinder with a normal automatic tranny?

My build date is April, I would think my car would have the newer dipstick if any change was made.

The OB is 4cyl with CVT. If I'd known the mpg's were so good I'd have went this route.

Now that the 13 outback is out, and gets better mileage than the 12, I was just thinking I should have gone for the outback.

I did see the DIY post, buts it's just the point the the seat squeaks like it does in a brand new car. I'd much rather have it fixed under warranty. Also, on my second oil fill and am down a half quart in 1200 miles. Going to bring it to the dealership today. I'll keep everyone posted.
