Maybe a little of both.

Saw a recall for 2013 Legacy/OB's.

Has nothing to do with oil obviously.
But everyone who knows me texts/emails me any time they find anything about Subaru in the news.

Just a quick update. Dropped my car off at the dealer this morning for the compression and leak-down test. They gave me a loaner and said they may have my car for a couple / few days depending on what they find during the tests.

I'll post again when I hear back from the dealer about what's going on.

Update: I've had my oil light come on 3 times since the last oil change, which was performed at the dealership. Which tallys up to 3 qts in 4,000 miles. I've been talking to the service manager and he told me they're going to have a specialist come out to look at the car. They are going to want to keep it for 3 days and they'll provide me with a loaner. The manager wouldn't provide me with much details, however he mentioned something of a possible engine swap.

Ok, so here's the deal... I just received a call from the service department and they told me to come pick up my car.

According to Taco (yes, that's the guy's name lol), SOA faxed them over an oil consumption worksheet to fill out and they need to further monitor my consumption situation. This means that I need to return to the dealership once every 1000 miles or every time my low oil light comes on for the next 4000 miles!

As far as the compression test is concerned, he said it was normal, but they noticed burnt oil around the plugs. Not sure if they did a leak-down test or not, but I'll be sure to ask.

Do you mean burnt oil ON the plugs (that is to say, fouled plugs)?

A compression test isnt as important as a leak-down test.

So I just got back from picking up my car.

The tech told me that they did indeed do a compression and a leak down test and both tests looked normal. I have the numbers from the tests and I will post them below. He also told me that this extended consumption test with worksheet, that SOA ordered, is something completely new and they've never seen this before. He went on to say that he thinks the oil may be blowing by the valve guides, but they won't be able to tell until they rip the engine apart and they can't do that until SOA gives them the green light. So basicly I have to jump through the hoops and do this extended consumption test even though both the dealership and I know that there is a problem and this rate of oil consumption is not normal.

Compression Test - Dry:

Cylinder #1: 185, #2: 180, #3: 200, #4: 180

Compression Test - Wet:

Cylinder #1: 190, #2: 190, #3: 205, #4: 195

Leak Test: 10% across the board

Before I forget, there were some things that I wanted to mention about the 2013 Impreza loaner that they gave me today. It was a non sport hatchback model with Bluetooth, paddle shifters and 16 inch rims.

First of all, this was the first time driving an automatic Impreza. I actually didn't mind driving it as much as I thought I would. It actually felt just as quick, if not quicker, using the paddle shifters, as my sport premium manual. Even though its nothing like rowing your own gears in a manual, it was still fun in its own right. It actually made me consider getting an automatic in my next vehicle.

There were also a few small changes that I noticed for the '13 model compared to my '12. Most notably was the much different sounding seat belt chime. It was a little less annoying sounding. Second thing that I noticed is that the center display now says "miles" after the OD reading. The third thing was the cruise control button and dash display icon are now a picture of a speedo instead of the word "cruise". Small details, but I tend to pay attention to that stuff.

They didn't elaborate. All the tech told me was that they saw signs of burnt oil around the plugs. I should of asked more questions about that.

thanks for sharing. i too would notice those sort of small changes as i just tend to look for them, so i appreciate hearing about them.

i agree, the CVT performs well. i may be odd, but i actually would have preferred the "manual mode" to be at the usual shift lever, rather than having paddle shifters. i guess it's hard to teach and old dog new tricks. after driving stick for over 20 years prior to this car, my hand always rests on the shift lever, even though such positioning now has absolutely zero functionality since the shifters are at the steering wheel. DOH!

(other weird things i still do after having this car for over a year is often turning off the car while it is in gear and then forgetting the whole brake pedal, to shift to park safety feature....with my MT, i would always just shut off the car and leave it in gear and be done...)

as in the hills or traffic or parallel parking?

i've done it for years (although i don't live in the city of SF, i have driven there many times). yet, last week, when i got caught in a traffic jam where i traveled under 4miles in 45 minutes, i got to realize one benefit of going from a MT to the CVT.

As much as I like driving a manual, I would probably not own one if I lived in a city or had to drive often in stop N go traffic.

In the rare occasion that I do have to drive in city traffic, I find it to be a huge PITA with a manual vehicle.

I may just end up opting for an auto with manual mode for my next daily driver. Especially now that a manual option is becoming harder and harder to find in most cars these days.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Mini's. Not only have I heard not so great things about their reliability, but the Impreza would be the smallest car that I would care to own. I'm thinking my next vehicle will probably be something mid-sized.

So they put it EXACTLY AT THE FULL MARK!!!
Excellent folks to deal with over at Mastro Subaru.
Now time to watch my oil consumption for real!
On the way home I saw a pretty cool car flying down the highway with a church lady behind the wheel. I finally caught up to her several lights later. It was an Outback sedan! Looked like a pretty sweet car and I think she had an H6 as she was hauling ass...
I now want one, still looking for a car for my girlfriend, so I will try to find one of these.

I LOVE micro-cars. To me, an 84' GTI or 91' CRX Si are the two cars that I most love. Well,I do love, and still have, my very first car- a totally resored (and then some) 1966 beetle. I cleaned meat grinders and sausage making equipment at a butcher shop for $4 an hour to buy it. I loved small cars even when gas was 89 a gallon.
To me, the allure is their light weight and maneuverability. And now, the mpg's. This Impreza is a pretty large car for me, and one of the very few cars I've ever owned with more than two doors.
What I REALLY want is a shorter, 3dr "RS" version of the impreza, with somewhere around 200 na hp and a six speed manual. That would make the perfect DD for me.

Nope. I dont NEED AWD, but I now am hooked. I like the overall layout of my Impreza, I just would have preferred, and bought, a shorter 3 dr version had it been available.
My focus was a zx3, the zx5 didnt appeal to me because I just literally never need rear doors. But the whole time I had that Focus, I was happy and liked the size and dimebsions, but always longed for awd.

Im just happy that I have the consumption test started!
I wanted to wait till the temps were high before I started. Lately, its been hitting the 90's.
