The misfiring might be a minor thing, like not connecting a sensor or two when the new engine was installed (although I would expect the service department to give the car a thorough test drive before having you come pick it up).
I bought it brand new March 2012. I am skeptical about the misfire because they spent an additional 2 weeks working on the misfiring issue after installing the new engine. They said they put 20 miles worth of a test drive on it, and it was running fine.

I got my Impreza 2.0 in April 2012. Prior to my last oil change the oil light came on and was 1 quart low on oil at after approx 3700 miles, with about 17k total miles. I'm at 3200 miles since last oil change and the oil light came on this morning. I called Subaru and the service guy asked if I was changing every 7500 miles. I told him I was having it changed every 3750 miles as advised. He was surprised it's a quart low after 3200 miles. Appointment and loaner car set for Saturday morning.

My replacement shortblock has been sitting at my Subaru dealer for going on 3 weeks now. Today is the 2nd time they have called me to push back the install. They said they only have one mechanic who is capable of doing the job and he is tied up on a different job that got held up due to parts.

Kind of nervous about the "one qualified" mechanic thing...if that guy is having a bad week when doing my install, stuff could easily be missed. Also after briefly talking with the service manager about extending my warranty, she said it is covered on the 5yr/60k powertrain and if there were issues they would be immediate. So, no, they won't be extending it. Well, I already have 28k...

I wish I could just trade for an XV like 79letour :P

It will likely work out fine once they schedule you. Sounds like you're getting their best technician (eventually).

And if it doesn't work out, who says you wouldn't be able to trade for an XV?

I'm not too worried about that really. I think its a low percentage occurance with this engine. I was also driving around 400 highway miles a week for the first year I had it...its possible the engine was broken in a bit to quickly? I wasn't hard on the rpms though.

I commute 20 miles total a week now though So once its replaced I won't even know if the issue is gone for months after. I just said that about the XV because I like the higher clearance and design, similar to outbacks, which I'd have gotten if I couldve afforded one at the time.

If the swap goes well though I'll likely hold onto the Imp for its life, will be paid off in a year anyway.

Seeing some of these stories scare me. I'd love to get an Impreza, but I don't want to get a new car if it is going to have issues. Do people with '13's report oil consumption at about the same amount as the '12s this time last year?

?? It is the same engine, my guestimate was about 0.02% burning oil, but it is impossible to know. The number of people that have had the issue have posted a lot, but there really are not that many of them.

If this makes you worry, don't read anything about VW's and go out and buy one today, lol.

Seriously, you cannot buy any car if your first stop is to find no one complaining about it. All car manufacturers produce a number of turds, but your odds of getting a decent Subaru are higher than your odds of getting a decent VW, or Honda, etc... if consumer reports is to be believed.

So my car is finally at the dealership getting repaired. The service guy said they were going to tear into the engine and find out where the oil is going. I asked if they were going to replace the short block and they told me it depends on if they find the oil is blowing by the rings or not. I can't imagine where else the oil would be going. I'm just waiting for a phone call to let me know what exactly what's going on.

I know I shouldn't let it get to me this much, but this whole oil burning situation, along with other issues, has caused me to be very stressed and unhappy with my Subaru. I wish I took the route that 79 did and just bought a new car. Although I wouldn't of got another Subaru, but that's just me.

Every car has issues. But those with oil.burning new cars are in the right to be very upset.
I cant believe Jrobb's situation. And yes, it is hard to believe I own a new Subaru...

Do you like the XV? I first saw it at the NY Auto Show 2 days after I ordered my 2012 Impreza and immediately said, "S.O.B!" My fiance and I are getting to work at family making in Sept and I want something heftier than an Impreza for the eventual little tyke.

You understand that from a people/cargo carrying capability, the Impreza hatch can carry everything that the XV can carry, right? Yes, the XV has more ground clearance, and is geared differently which might allow it to tow a light load, but do you really think you'll need those features in New Jersey?

I drove my Impreza in/through impressive snow storms in NY's Adirondack mountains last winter. I carried four adults and all of their luggage/gear (with the help of a car-top carrier mounted on the roof rails). The car was a champ during those two Adirondack trips, and I have to believe that I challenged the car harder than you likely will with a baby on board.

I use dedicated snow tires in the winter. I'd suggest the same for your Impreza, to keep you and your family safe when snow hits Jersey.

Impreza is plenty big enough for my family and bringing a full sized sized stroller, pack n play, etc etc on week long trips.

My next car will be a forester though

FWIW- yes I LOVE the XV. Is it perfect? No.
But to me its a better and more useful car than my Impreza was.

If I had kids, I'd lean more towards the Forester.

Update:

I just got word from the dealership that they are going to replace the short block, heads, valves, etc. Basicly everything but the long block. They also said that there was no ETA yet for the parts to come in so who knows how long they'll have it for.

fyi, Short block is the housing with the cylinders the base rotating assembly but no heads attached.

Long block is the short block + heads attached.

Glad you got good news

That's great news! It's long block if they're replacing the heads too. Even better...

Does anyone else think they are just throwing new parts at the problem instead of finding out what the root cause is? 75% of being a good mechanic is finding the cause of the problem. Anyone can bolt on parts

I think Subaru is using the defective short blocks they get back to analyze the situation. Perhaps they are in the process of analyzing the data and developing a solution. This is a complex problem, and might require some time and testing to determine the root cause of the problem, design a solution, test that solution, and then implement that solution into the factory.

When I was getting mine done it took 2 weeks to come in from Japan...then they ordered and empty short black with no internals and took another 2 weeks...then they had my car for 1 and a half months...at least I put 10000+ km on their loaner. Hope yours isn't that long of a wait. Congrats on the new block.

Thanks man.

Honestly, I don't even care if they have it for a month or longer as long as they fix the problem and put everything back together right. I'm fine with racking up miles on a loaner and keeping them off my car ;-)
