Nothing wrong with quoting yourself, just quoting people 10 posts in a row.

Jrobb- did anyone ever check out the cats on your car?
If your engine was all built up with carbon, I'd be curious to see what that does to the cars and o2 sensors.

If the PCV failed wouldn't the intake manifold be coated with oil?

Also it appears that Subaru isn't the only car brand suffering from oil issues (possible repost?):

I like the girls up there!
I'm currently trying to woo a Georgia girl, heh. I've visited Atlanta twice this year, and again next month.

Anyways, luckily I still don't have any oil issues after 25k miles. Even after 6000 miles on the same oil there is hardly any noticeable movement on the dipstick.

As many people have mentioned in this thread, many current cars do consume some level of oil.

Agreed. The thing that would bother me if my Impreza was one of the oil consumers (and which does bother those with oil consuming Imprezas) is that not ALL Imprezas consume oil. In fact, the vast majority of them don't. This would leave me feeling like I got one of the "bad" ones, even if the consumption was within spec.

For example, people who purchased Mazda RX-7 cars with the rotary engine knew that they would have to add oil between changes because they ALL consumed oil. This was considered normal for the engine, and there were no exceptions. It was just an understood characteristic of the car that people accepted.

But with our Imprezas, an oil consumer is the exception rather than the rule. I'm glad that mine does not consume oil, and I'd be at least a bit annoyed if it did.

What we are seeing is that thinner oil blends are less tolerant to small manufacturing differences. Also changes like variable valve timing are introducing more complexity to engines which increases the chance of a problem happening somewhere.

I had a 2009 Jetta that I sold after it once burned 1.5 quarts in 700 miles of driving. It had a problem with consumption, however it was considered "in spec" by VW which allows for up to 1 quart / 1000 miles. The car had a 10K oil change interval so I pity the fool that didn't check the oil regularly. Anytime VW took a look at it, it was fine. Then randomly it would just chug oil over a couple tanks of gas. During the 1.5 quart burn I had the oil light come on in the middle of a long trip, damn near in the middle of no where, and I was out of spare oil. Not a fun feeling.

No it isnt.
I'd imagine my old engine looks like jrobbs inside. When your brand new car burns oil it isn't a very good feeling at all. I totally agree with the above comment about the mazda rx's.

So I thought it funny that the latest Subaru news letter has a small "Fact" article about oil consumption. I asume they did that because of all the complaints that they've been getting.

One of the "facts" says that its normal, acceptable and even expected to consume oil between oil changes. While I agree it may be acceptable for a small amount of consumption, why do they have engines that consume no oil and some like mine that consume quarts of oil between changes?

Actually, I got a call from my dealership the Wed before Labor day telling me that my heads were at Subaru of New England and that they would have them within a couple of days. The day after Labor day, I had to take the loaner car in for an oil change. While I was there, I inquired about the heads and was told that they hadn't seen them yet and didn't know when they'd get them. The next day I contacted the senior rep at SOA that is handling my case. She said that because of the holiday, the parts may have gotten delayed by a day. She also told me that she would call me later that day or the next with more info. It's now been more than a week later and still haven't heard anything. Total time without my car has been about 2 and a half months.

FFS, there isn't a chance for a buy back because of the age/miles of the vehicle? They owe you big time... I would tell them they should pick up the finance payments for the time it has been in the shop. On a side note, did you at least get a nice loaner? A byproduct of this mess is that you're not putting miles on your car... If there is any consolation.

Yeah, no luck with the buy back option. That was the first thing that I inquired about. I was, however, offered a couple different compensation options that I'm still deciding on. I can't divulge any specifics about the offers, but one includes purchasing another new Subaru. I honestly don't think I want another Subaru tho.

My loaner is a base '13 Impreza auto sedan. Nothing exciting.

I don't blame you for not wanting another Subaru. Your car is not the norm though. If you didn't have the engine issue, would you be happy with the car? If so, then I would consider getting a new one. Just look at Charlie, he's happy his car is normal!

I would agree with you about my car not being the norm, but I am genuinely not very satisfied with the car regardless of the engine problems. The Impreza is a decent car, but not a very good fit for me. Also, Subaru doesn't have any other cars in their lineup that I'm interested in. Maybe the XV, but its really nothing more than a lifted Impreza. My last car was a MazdaSpeed 6 GT and I am reminded every day how much I miss the extra power and amenities.

What you need is an STI or WRX to put a smile on your face. I have an STI also, and it is fun to go from both sides of the spectrum.

Does your dealership also sell any other brands? For example, the owner of my Subaru dealership also owns Ford and a Chevy dealerships. I guess if I was completely disgusted with Subaru, I might consider working with her to get me into a Focus or Cruze diesel....

So far the oil level is looking good. I'm at 1000 miles on Idemitsu 0w20. About 4k on the car total.
Just cleaned the loose bugs and debris off the air filter.
Still finding new things to blacken, ordered some black lug nuts and am doing the trim on the dash in black. Its just so much nicer enjoying a car as opposed to "being stuck with one".

I'm not sure, but I guess it's worth looking into. If I were to go with another brand, I'd probably go back to Mazda. Their reliability is just about on par with Subaru's and they make much more engaging vehicles IMHO. The new Mazda 3 has been on my radar for quite some time and the reviews that I have read so far, really make it out to be a great steer! It's also has tons of available high-tech goodies which I really appreciate in a vehicle. The only problem is that I feel it's a little risky buying the first year of a newly designed model.
