Do cars tend to consume more oil during city driving or during sustained highway driving?

Interesting. I've not seen one in person yet. Did I hear that the manual tranny won't be available initially?

During city driving, and when doing a lot of engine braking.

Right now the 6MT is only available with the 2.0l. I've read that they'll pair it with the new 2.5l for the 3 in the near future. I believe you can get the 6MT with the 2.5 in the Mazda 6, but only in its lowest trim level.

The ones with THE problem burn it steadily no matter how you drive it or what kind of oil you run.

The new Mazda 3 has been on my radar for quite some time and the reviews that I have read so far, really make it out to be a great steer! It's also has tons of available high-tech goodies which I really appreciate in a vehicle. The only problem is that I feel it's a little risky buying the first year of a newly designed model.
The new Mazda 3 is a great car. The only thing that kept me from getting it was the interior fit and finish. I absolutely couldn't stand it. Everything else about it was perfect to me though. AWD was awesome to get, but it wasn't the deciding factor for me =0.

Update on my oil consumption test for my 5MT '12 Impreza
Went back to the dealer 1200 miles after an oil change, it was 1/2 quart low. Dealer topped it off and said to come back after another 1200 miles. It took me about a week to drive that much so I went back and again it was 1/2 quart low. Again dealer topped it off and said to come back after 1200 miles. Said I had to do that 4 times in total. I'll be coming up on the 3rd one soon and so far oil level is good. I drive a mix of city/hwy in the traffic ridden streets of Los Angeles. Hoping for the best lol.

Yeahh I figured. Since SOA allows 1 quart every 1200 miles. I don't know how to feel about burning 1/2 quarts though, a little annoyed that it's burning and glad that it isn't burning that much lol

My guess is that you're thinking of the previous version of Mazda3. The 2014 Mazda3 that we've been discussing is brand new (I haven't seen one on the road yet), and I've read that its interior fit/finish is improved over the previous model.

Thats how my 12 was. It burned enough to really piss me off but not enough for soa to do anything.

Oh nice! I'll have to check one out. I knew they refreshed the Mazda 6, I hadn't seen a new 3 yet. Yes, I was talking about the "new" Mazda 3 model year 2012.

Go to Stan Olsen's and talk to Tom about the 2013/2014 Mazda 3's.

I know a couple of CX-7 owners that would rather have a subaru even if smoke were billowing from the boxer's tailpipe.

I just finished my oil consumption test, been burning 1/4 to 1/2 qt each time. The dealer said another dealer in the area swapped out 3 engines already. they also said to check a valve in the engine which may be left open and that's the reason for the oil burning. The dealer ordered the new valve for me, should be here this week. Dealer said this valve is suppose to open and close when the piston is going and the unburnt oil is supposed to go back into the oil case. Sorry if this sounds weird, I'm not a mechanic

I'm about 4500 miles in on my oil change and I was down about 1/2 qt (half way between lo and high marks on the dipstick). Not too bad, not enough to annoy me but hopefully it doesnt increase with time

How many total miles are on your car right now?

Also, how consistent is your oil checking process? Do you always park in the same place before checking the level? Do you always wait for your engine to cool off at least a certain amount of time before checking the level?

These are factors that can greatly affect your reading.

I have about 22,800 on my car. I honestly don't check my oil that often, I probably should more. I checked it when I did my oil change, after 1 leg of a road trip of about 1200 miles, and just the other day.

I check my oil on flat concrete slabs, one at my apartment and the other in my parents' garage. I would think these are flat enough for oil level sake. And I always check it when its completely cool, I find it hard to read when the oil is still warm

While the levelness can affect the reading, I can't measure any difference when checkig hot vs cold. And I've checked subaru dipsticks a lot in the last two years.

i find, perhaps with my less than perfect eyes, it easier to read when its cooler. when the oil is hot, it's so thin!

Its a bit thinner when warm but its still gonnae read the same level.
Its easier to read cold, for sure. But it doesnt expand enough to change the level when warm. It is, afterall, 100% synthetic.
Fwiw I check mine whenever its convenient. Usually when cold.

I guess? I'm at about 18000 miles on the Subie. They will put this piece in and see if the oil is still consuming or not. Hope it works. I like the car alot and putting a new engine in it...who knows what can go wrong.

There is an updated oil consumption test for the 12 impreza. If going through 1/3 qt within 1200 miles. I will yave to re-read, but think there is an oil ring replacement procedure. Have your dealer look umder the forms section on subarunet and they will find it

I cant find anything to substantiate or even suggest that 1/3qt in 1200 miles will get you anything fixed. If you have a link or a pic please post it.
