Unfortunately I'm not in a great position to get rid of it now. I'd like to wait til its paid down or off before selling it. I just don't plan to keep it for the long haul.

I really think the bad thing about this is their 100 dollar oil changes when it could cost you 40 dollars out the door if you did it yourself. so you lose 60 dollars every oil change. Let me know what happens when you do have a problem i cant imagine them covering blown head gasket with that.

The dealers that force you to do all the maintenance at their location are often the same dealers who tack on bull**** "extra" services at 15K/30K/60K and will also fight tooth and nail to not cover items outside of Subaru's warranty.

Patriot Subaru in Maine charged me $130 for a 7.5K oil change and told me it was because they replaced the cabin air filter. I asked for the old filter suspecting it wasn't dirty, and the guy responded with "You need to replace those or you void the whole warranty". I had my kid with me and we were late for something, so it wasn't worth arguing over.

Some dealers offer lifetime power train warranties and long as you have service records, that is what to shoot for.

So 2000 miles on my new short block / heads and I'm down over a quart. Getting a little concerned now seeing as things should be pretty much broken-in.

Need to take it back in a 1000 miles for it's first oil change since the repairs. Curious to see if they over fill by a quart again this time.

But is it down from over fill level, or normal? Most engines have a happy level for oil and if you are over it will just spit it out.

I estimate it was over filled by about a quart. Now the level is down below the full hole on the dipstick. We'll see what happens in the next 1000 miles.

Really? I've never heard this before.

The only thing I've heard about overfilling is that it can cause the oil to foam, which loads the oil with air, which isn't good for lubrication.

I dont buy the break-in consumption hoopla. Sure its gonnae use a little but you shouldnt be dropping a full quart. My XV's dipstick hasnt dropped any yet in nearly 8000 miles. It had 7mi when I got the car.

100% true on airplanes, but instead of a pcv system to burn it, they just have a breather tube and it gets dumped.

A little different on a car engine because they don't have to be certified to run x hours, and generally manufacturer recommended level is correct, but if it was filled over that level I dint see why it wouldn't behave the same.

My motorcycle just has a breather, and if I fill it over 3.25 qts it definitely spits it out until at 3.25(makes a huge mess) and it will stay there the rest of the change interval. Iirc it is supposed to be 3.5qts, but I don't use that guideline because of what I just said.

Just did an oil change on my car, 4.3qts of Amsoil OE came out after 6500mi. Last change was Amsoil XL, 7000mi, 4.5qts drained out. Car never burned any appreciable amount until about 12,000mi. Just put in Pennzoil Platinum to see if that burns less.

Consumption creeped up just a little, and this is about the edge of my "acceptable" amount of consumption for a brand new car with 21,000mi on it. Hopefully it will not start to consume anymore than this.

You could also be experiencing consumption just from switching oil due to the different chemistries in the oil. Even between Amsoil OE and XL. Try 2-3 intervals on the same oil.

This had crossed my mind while trying to think of any rationalization for why it burns oil now. I ran OE for 4500mi on the 3000-7500mi change, did not consume any noticeable amount then. I honestly thought it was just the car not liking the XL, but now im not sure. Will have to wait and see how it likes the pennzoil platinum.

Im in a cvt and my commute is 80% highway, so that should be more conducive to not burning oil. I know its not nearly as much as some people have consumed on here, but im keeping my eye on it to see if it continues to get worse.

On a side note, I noticed something new this oil change. Previously I had always put in 5.3qt's, this time I just put in the 5qt jug. With just the 5qts it reads almost perfectly at the top dot, so full fill. This falls in line with the 5.1qt revised capacity.

When is the build date of the car? Is it before 3/13 as theorized earlier in this thread?

Manufactured 7/12. I called my dealer to ask about the new TSB and whether or not my car could be affected. They told me despite my car being built before 3/13 it was not affected, and it had the updated rings already. Not sure if I buy it or not, just seems like they wanted to get off the phone.

If your worried about oil consumption, but still really want an Impreza, go with an automatic. Supposedly the vast majority of the oil burners are cars with the 5 speed MT.

Full disclosure... I always get a bout of cold feet on purchases like this, so that's a lot of it right there...

I don't blame you. Besides a house, a vehicle is the biggest purchase that most people will make. If I had known about the potential oil consumption issues before I bought my Impreza, I probably would of stayed far away.

I'm not sure the 2013's are affected like the 2012's are. I also think if you have a soft breakin you open up the possibility of the rings not fully seating. We now have several 2013's in the rotation and none of them are having the oil issue, or any issue for that matter. I still think its the best overall bang for the buck, for us anyway. The wagon has space, awd, good milage, simplistic design, and reliability.

How does your dealer know your car has updated rings despite your car being built before 3/13? It doesn't make sense that some would have updated rings and some don't. If they updated the design because there was something wrong with it, why would Subaru continue to use the inferior rings on some Impreza but not all?

I think you're right, your dealer is full of **** and wanted you off the phone.

I absolutely love everything about my car. Its hard to find a better package out there that will be cheaper to maintain, or more efficient. I would have complete confidence in purchasing a 2014 Impreza or XV. My only regret is not getting the XV instead, but since I drive 24,000 miles a year I decided to go for the slightly more efficient car.
