My personal belief is that because it is much thinner, and people 'believe' that the oil can go 10,000 miles without replacing it, and without checking it.

I have had multiple customers that swore by it until their motor blew due to lack of oil. Most had only gone 3-4000 miles from their last oil change.

If you plan on checking (and loosing) your oil, then it might be OK. But I would still go with something else.
Ever read Bob is the oil guy forums, typically Mobil 1 is good stuff.

My last vehicle has run Mobil 1 since 110,000 miles(used regular non synthetic before) and now has 220,000 running 10k intervals

Ive used mobile 1, and Castrol. I prefer Castrol now. No real reason. Personal taste and price influence my decision.

Do you have an opinion on Amsoil oils? Or do you see this product so infrequently that you have no opinion?

Does Castrol make a 0W20 full synthetic product? If so, where do you get it?

I haven't seen any issues with Amsoil.....quite a few of our customers use it.

I'm not saying Mobil 1 isn't a good oil, it's just not the best for Subarus. Again, I don't know why except experience.

In other vehicles I'm sure it's fine, but then again, I don't see them day in and day out. I just see what happens when it's used in Subarus. I also have used it in previous vehicles and not had an issues and I know alot of Subaru customers that use it in their other vehicles without a problem....the same ones with blown motors from using it in their Subarus.

Thanks for posting your concerns about Mobil 1. I've read so many posts in multiple car forums from people that love Mobil 1 and an equal amount about from people who think its garbage.

I use it because it's a readily available, half way decent priced synthetic oil. Also I used it for most of my oil changes in my last car and never had any problems.

I personally feel that Mobil 1 is at the very least, a decent oil and haven't seen any proof to make me think otherwise.

I did, however, think about giving amsoil a try at some point. I already bought Mobil 1 for this up coming oil change so maybe I'll make the switch for my next change.

But if oil consumption is a concern of yours (it is), don't you want to make the switch now?

OK, thanks. That's more expensive than the Amsoil OE 0W20 that I buy (through a local distributor, so I'm not paying for shipping; $6.10/quart). So I guess I'll stick with that.

Suppose you have a point. I could still return the Mobil 1. If what rexygirl says is accurate, I should be better safe than sorry and switch ASAP.

If Kelly says don't run mobil1, I wouldn't. I'm an Amsoil guy anyway.

That's what I would do. My car's oil consumption has been flawless with the Amsoil OE 0W20 that I put in at 1700 miles (I'm currently at 2700 miles on the odometer, so I admit that my evidence is somewhat circumstantial at this point).

At 7500 miles I was originally planning to switch to one of the higher-change-interval Amsoil oils, like the XL or Signature Series. But I'm starting to prefer the idea of changing the oil every 5k and sticking with the Amsoil OE. Perhaps if people start submitting Used Oil Analysis reports from XL or Signature Series oil changes, proving that an extended change interval is safe, I'll reconsider.

XL looks very similar on paper, Signature looks like a better oil. I'm currently using the XL but will be switching to Signature

Rexy, do you work for a dealership? If so, what do you guys fill FB20s with?

Several of us have analyzed the factory fill, and the viscosity is well below what most M1 0w20 UOAs show.

I have a hard time believing those who change their own oil go 10K miles without checking the level. No oil, no matter how good, can do its job if it isn't there.

I've already returned the Mobil 1 and have decided to try amsoil OE 0w-20.

The oil in my engine at the moment is Mobil 1 0w-20. For the past 4000 miles, I've been experiencing approx half quart consumption per 1200 miles. This is about the same amount of consumption I saw in the first 3000 miles with the factory fill.

I'm honestly not expecting to see a reduction in oil consumption with the amsoil though. I'm thinking the only way to reduce consumption is to use a heavier weight oil. Which I still may try if I don't see a difference with the amsoil 0w-20.

The way i look at it is, 0-20 is 0-20 no matter what brand.

not all are equal. I have tried a few different brands in our jetta and Mobil 1 is one of the better. Pentosyn was the worst, which was disappointing because it is supposed to be a good European made oil

You certainly should be correct. But RexyGirl's observations suggest that this might not be true, at least with our 2.0L boxer engines.

As people get more mileage on their 2.0L engines, and observe their oil consumption, and submit samples for Used Oil Analysis, we should start to see differences in oil brands, if there are any.

I guess this depends on how you define "not much more expensive". From a percentage point of view, Signature is a lot more expensive.

The following are prices to buy 6 quarts of the different Amsoil 0W20 synthetic oils:

OE: $36.60
XL: $45.90
Signature: $63.30

So the oil change price difference between OE and Signature is $26.70. I agree that this isn't a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, but it certainly does make an oil change more pricey.

The real argument for Signature is if it allows you to truly extend your oil change intervals. If a person using OE changed his oil every 3k miles, but could go 7.5k miles (or more?) with Signature, then at that point the Signature would become the less expensive product.

My plan for now is to use OE and a 5k oil change interval (which is already a more conservative oil change interval than Subaru recommends). But I will be tuned in to the UOA results that people post, which will likely affect which oil product and oil change interval I use.

So I'm planning on doing my first oil change on my 2012 Impreza within the next week or two. I was originally going to go with Mobil 1 from Walmart since it was the most economical, but now you guys have me thinking twice. I know there are some other folks here from the Rochester, NY area that use Amsoil. Is there a local Amsoil dealer you guys purchase from?
