Yes, I believe the 2008 WRXs were fraught with reliability issues, per Consumer Reports. And they got poor reviews by enthusiasts for being too soft for a sporty car.

Subaru resolved these issues starting in 2009.

Noted, and thanks. It depends on what kind of deal I'm able to finagle out of salesmen. Ideally I'd like an all stock 2010 HB wrx. I just really love hatchbacks. Sedans have never quite appealed to me as much. But at this point I think I'd entertain any offers. My ins will be SLIGHTLY cheaper but I really can't get into much higher monthly payments.

Yea, I have heard some WRX complainst about them being a tad softer than they should be. I guess in 09 they changed the suspension. So 09-11 maybe? For you to find cheaper insurance on the WRX is hilarious. Maybe because it's not a NEW car...???

I couldn't believe it! After tying a couple VIN's it seems virtually any car will be cheaper to insure. Not tons cheaper, but cheaper. Odd.

I cross checked. My aunt works at Progressive. They wanted 1800 a year for the Impreza 2.0. 1600 for a Rex. For some reason, its cheaper for me to insure a sports car than my 2.0. Man that's definitely the final nail in my cars coffin.

Interesting. But hold out for a hatchback WRX, since that's the body style you prefer. And hold out for a 2009+, too.

Good luck!

Damn, those are some expensive rates! I pay less than half of what you got quoted for a Rex per year for my 2.0.

Of course, there are many variables to insurance rates, such as:
  • Deductible and other coverages chosen (full glass, towing, etc.)
  • Year, brand, and model of car
  • Driver's accident/infraction record
  • Geographical location
  • Insurance company
  • Probably a whole bunch more

No accidents, only 1 ticket in the last 8 years, and it wasn't enough over to affect anything. We have insurance through horace mann, which is teacher only insurance, otherwise i would have rates like you too

I did my math wrong, we pay 318 every 6 months

I know you want a hatchback, and I know you live in FL, but this sure looks like a nice car for an amazing price:

Might just be worth a one-way ticket to Ohio!

That's nice man...14k miles. Whew... I'd just contact him and the dealership and tell him to take it off Ebay....most times they will so they don't have to pay Ebay fees....if you know ANYTHING about EBAY...is they rob the hell out of you on fees while listing, AND when a high item sells.

You could make out from that actually. You could tell him you will pay for the listing fee if he takes it down, THEN....tell him to take 50% off of the selling fees price and take that off the sale price of the car. Or...simply take the listing fee, minus what the selling fee woujld have been and split the difference on that. If you have found better though...move on. I do have buddies in Ohio that would pick this up for me though. I'm tempted myself.

I do have family in Ohio, but I wouldn't want them driving my car one block. Ebay has a lot of deals for sure. Idk, I'd rather drive the car first.

If its worth a plane ticket and taxi ride i would do it. Im driving my second car from florida to atlanta in a few weeks.

Ask the taxi driver the stay while you look at the car. Its worth the extra money.

Not to throw a monkey wrench but I can see the new thread:

"I bought a used WRX off ebay, and the turbo blew while I drove it home, what would you do?"

Try to buy from Maestro with a warranty IMHO.

Now to inadvertently insult 09 WRX sedan drivers: That car looks like any other subaru sedan, definately not sporty, except for the hood scoop you would mistake it for a base Impreza, legacy, or another generic foreign car. Sorry, not feeling the 09 sedan.

Unless I wanted a sleeper, then maybe. I'd go hatch myself.

I'm talking to them atm Zeeper. See- sometimes we agree.
But there seems to be plenty of used late model rexes around, for sure. Had I known about the insurance, I'd be driving a (then) leftover 2011 wrx right now.

I guess I should have included rexes when I was car shopping. And I should have checked EVERY car I was considering's VIN with USAA.

WRXs require premium gas, right? If so, don't forget to factor that into your Cost of Ownership calculations.

I'm sure your insurance rate reduction will help pay for the more expensive gas that's consumed at a faster rate, but it's something to keep in mind.

Also try to project how you would feel if/when gas prices go up again (with the unrest in the Middle East, we should assume that gas will increase). In 2008, RUG reached $4.12/gallon (in 2008 dollars). I don't know what premium sold for at that time.

http://www.GasBuddy.com/gb_retail_pr...me=60&units=us

What might be acceptable at today's gas prices might become more painful if you're buying premium gas at high prices.

I agree that owning and driving a WRX would be very fun. But the only reason the 2012 Impreza even made it onto my radar screen was because of the improved fuel economy of the 2.0L engine. Prior to that, Subarus (both turbo and normally-aspirated) were never considered by me. I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy a WRX if premium was selling for $4.50+ a gallon. My office is 20 miles from my house. If the WRX gets ~20 mpg, then each day would cost me $9 in gas in this $4.50/gallon scenario. In the meantime, if I'm averaging ~33 mpg in my 2.0L Impreza (I am), and if RUG goes up to $4/gallon, then my daily commute would cost me $4.85. That's a significant difference over time.

I'm not trying to change your mind about anything. I'm just reminding you to consider all factors. You probably already have.
