Well- the deed is done folks! Just put thirty miles on the new oil. No noticeable mpg difference, watching the gauge and driving my normal route. At this point I'm pretty satisfied in that I've done all I can fore this car. Went with Castrol full synthetic 5w30 and so far so good. Seems a little queiter at idle in the garage.
I measured the amount of oil that came out, and after losing at least 1/4" on the dipstick, I measured 6.25 quarts!!!!!!!
Some consumption test!
Can't wait to check at a thousand miles!!!

Have consistently been told by many Subaru owners of older models their Flat 4 engines are ALL mechanically loud.

With bonnet open the loudest noise from mine on start up seems to come from the Injectors being at the top of the engine and the CVT which sounds a bit like a Hoover especially when reversing had asked the servicing department at first oil change and they said the noise was normal with our CVTs.

How much did you put in, and where's the level on the dipstick?

Good luck. I'm a fan of Castrol products.

I put in 5.1 quarts, because that's the standard jug size now. Checked and its just a hair over the full mark. So- I think I'll leave it be, for now. I can always top it off later if need be (used to THAT!). But the thought of just being able to buy the one big jug was too tempting, and its only .2qt less than called for. I do have some 5w30 on standby if I need it though.
Gotta love the 5w30, commonly available, huge selection, and much more cost effective.
If this does well, I may just go with a 6000mi interval from now on, and do the filter every other change or so.

Once again, trying to maintan a sliver of optimism. I should have just done what I though was best from the get-go. I let soa and the dealer play games while the mileage kept racking up and basically just got a big old run-around many times over.
IF I ever buy a NEW car again, I'll take the bull by the F' ing horns. Everything I've ever meticulously maintained myself has given me good long lasting dependability.

Now time to drve it some more...

If you change your oil every 6k miles, then why not also change the filter at each oil change? 6k miles is so close to the recommended 7.5k mile change interval, I'd just change the filter too. No point in cheaping out to save $7.

I'm currently doing a 5k oil and filter change interval, using Amsoil OE 0W20. Planning to do my 2nd change tomorrow. Did my first oil change at 1700 miles, and now the car has 6700 miles on it. This will be my first drain through a Fumoto valve.

Might send an oil sample into Blackstone labs at my 3rd (11,700 mile) change. That will tell me if a 7.5k oil change interval would be acceptable. Until then, I'll stick with 5k.

Its not so much a saving money thing as a non-necessity. There isn't as much to filter as an engine get fully broken in. Its already had five of them on it. Actually six. With toyotas and others going 10,000 miles on a filter as factory spec, I really don't see the need to change the oil filter EVERY oil change after 25,000 miles or so. I've never had any issue with this practice.

^^We should all do what we feel is right.

Your approach is probably fine. But I don't like to f**k around when it comes to engine lubrication. So I'll continue to install a fresh filter with each oil change.

^^ I'm with you on this one. It can't hurt to change it every time. I just follow what the user manual says (except for OC interval).

You REALLY don't NEED a new filter EVERY time. That's why most manuals have traditionally had specs for oil changes with or WITHOUT filter replacement.
My car has ALWAYS had a new filter, but if I find an oil the engine *likes*, and end up putting a ton of miles on the car, I'll likely only do the filter every other change.
UTI teachers were the first to suggest this.
But I DID buy the car to be cheap of gas and maintenance, so every few bucks I save makes me like the car more. That oil change yesterday cost me $32 total and I couldve done it a lot cheaper.
I need to start thinking about tires in 10,000 miles. That won't be cheap.
So far so good with the new oil. Warmup not any different. If it ends up consuming it, at least I tried.

I should of checked on here awhile ago to see if anyone else is having the same problems as I. I got my Impreza this June and currently have 19,000 miles on it. After my oil change at 7,500 miles is when I started having issues with the low oil level light coming on. First time I took the car in they said it was fine and reset it. After that it was bad oil sensors. Not one, nor the replacement..but now I am on the third one. In this period too from about 10k to 15k is when I noticed my oil pressure light coming on from time to time, but not fully illuminated just glowing depending on engine use. We discovered at 16,000 miles the engine was then consuming 1-2 quarts in 2,000 miles. I'm on my second oil consumption test right now and have been on and off the phone with SOA. Has anyone been able to resolve this because i'm sick and tired of the dealership giving me the runaround.

Mine started after my first dealer change too.
Soa and the dealers aren't doing anything as far as I've been able to tell. A couple of folks have had engines replaced but not forum members.
did you vote in the oil consumption poll?
Keep us posted, those of us with oil problems are very curious as to what if anything subaru does or says about it.

It's been a back and forth thing the past couple months. Like I said I just started my second oil consumption test so I will see where I am at after. Right now the two things we have talked about with SOA is either replacing the motor or for them to buy my car back. We will just have to see.

Just did my 2nd oil change today (using Amsoil OE 0W20 oil both times). Odometer at 1700 miles when did first oil change, and 6700 miles today. Poured in 5.3 quarts both times.

I was surprised at how dirty the oil looked, but I know that oil color is no way to tell the lubrication qualities of the oil, so I didn't worry about it.

I measured 4.8 quarts of oil in the drain pan, and this didn't include the small amount I spilled on the garage floor as I was pouring into the old oil bottles or the oil that was trapped in the old oil filter.

So I'm guessing my car consumed 0.3 or 0.4 quarts of oil over 5k miles. Not too shabby.

At 200 miles, still doing fine. It seems to like the thicker blood...

Good to know that 30 weight is working out for you, 79.

From the charts I've seen, 30 weight has the same properties as a 20 weight running 15-20F cooler.

The viscosity difference isn't as drastic as the SAE numbers suggest, though I would wait a few minutes after the blue light turns off before fully loading the engine.

This is encouraging, but I can't believe that you'd actually be able to tell anything after such a short distance. Please give us another update in a week or two.

im guessing in 5k miles we will know. So maybe a couple months. I sure hope it fixes the problem because its such a simple fix if others have the same trouble.

I can say it quited the valvetrain, and that it seems to be generally quieter. No dipstick movement yet, but as you said, Steve, too early to really tell anything.
I let the blue light go off and I'm always easy on it for the first couple mins of running.

That is what i was saying earlier. 40wt seems to be a large increase in viscosity though

Seems from the fr-s forums that quite a few of those guys are going with 5w40.
With "winter" approaching, w40 was not a consideration.
I can't wait to get 1000-1200 miles on it and see what the dipstick reads!

79letour, how do you drive your car? Do you get on the gas a lot? Just out of curiosity, how did you break in your engine? Seems like you didn't have a consumption issue at first?
