What oil change interval are you planning to use with the Amsoil Signature? Signature is expensive stuff, which I could only justify if it's good for longer than other oils.

Right now I'm using Amsoil OE, with a 5k mile oil change interval. I just changed it last weekend, so it won't be due for another change until sometime this winter, at around 12k miles on the odometer. I plan to submit a sample to Blackstone Labs for a used oil analysis at that time.

If you're going to do an extended oil change interval with the Signature, are you planning to submit a sample for analysis? This is the only way we could know if Amsoil's claims for Signature can be believed for our boxer engines.

I really don't think the 'boxer' layout of the engine is to blame, I've had plenty of old VW's that didn't have oil consumption problems. And my granny's old GL wagon went 400,000+++ miles in its life one one engjne. I don't recall oil consumption in that car. It was sort of the inspiration for my impreza purchase.

I didn't like xl, which is pretty darn close to oe on paper. I ordered my Blackstone kit and plan to test my fumoto valve out at 6000 miles and see how it is doing. I would like to run 12-15k intervals with a filter change at 7.5k. If it doesn't look like I can get what I want it I will decide, I guess after the vw I'm used to a $50+ oil change in my garage

But so far the signature seems to be holding up better than the xl. I know it is cooler now, but the last few thousand the xl was in the car was cooler too.

That's awesome! What was your consumption like before you switched to Amsoil Signature?

Not severe like others (you too iirc), on a pace of about 1.4qts/7500. Every 1200 miles was about 7oz. But I haven't seen any change at all with the signature. I tried changing driving habits but it made no effect.

Well- so much for optimism. At 780 miles, I'm 1/18-3/16" down on the dipstick. Bummer.
I noticed that my local parts store got some Signature Amsoil 0w20 in, so I guess I'll switch back next change.

Most 5W30 are thinner than 0w30. I don't think I would try a 5w

Are you still above the full dot? You are only down about 4oz if you are. What I have seen on my car is the 5.3qts full mark is about 3/16" over the dot, from there down to about 1/8" under the full dot is between 6-7oz

Really?! I thought it was the exact opposite... Man, this oil weight thing is friggin confusing. Once I think I have it all figured out, someone posts something about oil that completely throws my understanding of it out the door.

They shear less than 5w30 too. Some 0w30 are almost 40wt oils they are so thick, especially German castrol

No- its about 3/16" below the full line. It was filled to JUST over the full mark. Maybe a sixteenth or so.
I'm done experimenting. It burns oem 0w20 and it burns synthetic 5w30. It burns oil. Bummer. I got my hopes up this time.

I think the oil itself has been ruled out as the culprit of the consumption.

If that's true, then all those subie techs that said it was because of the 0W20 were either lieing or don't know what the hell they're talking about. That also means that there truely is a flaw with some of our engines / engine component(s). We'll probably really never know for certain.

For S&G keep it in there and see how long it takes for the light to turn on. (factoring the correct fill of the engine) you might see it will exceed your last burn rate. No one said it would cure it totally but it should have slowed it down

Continuing with the 0w-20 makes little sense to me since you know that it will just burn more with it.

as far as a "flaw" in the design. thats usually determined when engines are spinning a certain bearing, breaking a rod, or blowing HG if you list burning oil as a flaw..... buddy you aint got no idea.

as ive said before the type of build. Loose vs tight determine the oil consumption. when you are measuring thousandths there is a lot of wiggle room.

Keep us informed 79 and make sure you keep 2 quarts of oil in the back.

Time will tell.
It aint the oil! But most of us knew that. I was just being optimistic. Its already dropped and hasn't even been nearly 1000 miles.
Meanwhile- my seat most definitely broken inside in some way. Its making noises again. Not so much a squeak as a pop. Its constantly annoying as anytime you shift in the seat at all it just feels like a broken spring.
If I were wealthy, I'd send it back to japan with a nice note attatched.

Well I wasn't thinking as much as a design flaw as I was thinking perhaps there was a bad batch of rings or some other engine component(s). Or maybe just some of the engines were built on the "looser" side of the tolerance scale.

I forget, did you try a 0W30? If so, did you have the same results?

sitting at the stealership atm for my consumption test (first visit - 2000km).
Can't wait for them to tell me that "all is ok" (given the dipstick reading is not too bad). ... and for me to show them a picture of where the dipstick was reading when they gave it to me after started the test (a good 3/4inch above full...)

Well; no surprises
they took it for 50mins (they told me beforehand it should only take 20mins..);
Svc guy came back with a dirty piece a paper - told me they've "only" had to put in 500ml of il...
Then I asked - Ok but for the test, did you take into account the level it was at when you gave it back to me last time ?
He looked at me liek a deer in headlights... I proceeded to tell him how much oil there was in last time - much more than the full mark - andshown him on the picture...
he told me No, it wasnt' taken into account because they NEVER overfill them... hmm...
wtf.
So I passed for a liar more than anything. Told me to come back in 1600km (wtf... last time they told me it was three visits, one every 2000km...)

Boy am I less and less impressed...

A dealer would NEVER over-fill. Lmao
My receipt for the last oil change says 0w30. Was told its a misprint. Idk.
Not gonna bother with 0w30, just gonna try the amsoil and continue to ponder how to best get out of the quagmire.
