Your dealer sounds like my experiences. They're fine if you're an old fart paying a hundred bucks for a tranny fluid change. These "ugly duckling" cars are a headache and soa and the dealers keep playing the big run-around game.
And the owners manual says lots of stupid things. Like the pathetic oil allowance and the parts about checking the oil and coolant at the gas station "after the car cools down". Lmao... Owners Manual was written by evil lawyers.
The oil consumption allowance is what Subaru and other manufacturers use for a guideline. They aren't "out to get you", it's just the way it is. I wouldn't like it if my car consumed oil like yours, don't get me wrong. If it bothered me enough (which it probably would), I would trade my car in even if I had to get a used car. I think you would be hard pressed to find any other owners manual that wouldn't be written like the Impreza manual.

My above comment was in response to djbono's saying he drove an impreza.
And I know all owners manuals are lame and written by EVIL lawyers. I wasn't only talking about subaru. Its just that this subaru is the only car that's ever had this problem, and the language in the manual pretty much means they don't care at all about oil consumption until there's smoke billowing out the pipe at stop lights.

I definitely don't envy any oil-burning brz owners. They have to burn more than 1.1 quarts per 600 miles to be fixed.

I have about 20K on my 2012 Impreza and it started turning on the oil level light at approximately 16K, it usually turned off by the next time I stop and started the car, but now it's coming on when the oil gets changed almost instantly and they just add a half of quart of the 0-20W synthetic. I don't know what the deal is, but no one seems to know why is it burning oil like that?

Welcome to the club!
Mine burned oil since early on, but at 15-16k the consumption got worse.
No one has figured out why many of us have this issue while most don't seem to.
I suggest you check the dipstick a LOT, and start trying to figure out how much oil you're losing. And call and get it documented with soa.

Can't tell if your issue is defective oil light or actual consumption did you check oil level when light came on

Yes, that was the first thing I did, parked on leveled ground & check the oil as the engine cooled off, sure enough it needed a quart of oil.

Good luck! The more complaints they receive, the better it'll be for all of us with consumption problems. Hopefully some day Subaru will come out and admit they have an issue and a fix will be implemented.

I dont have time to take my car in for the dim oil light, so I will have to wait til next oil change. It is coming on nightly now, atleast that is when i can see the light.

I checked the oil on the the other day. Seems to be right in the middle of the two holes.
Where should the oil level be?

Anyplace between the two holes is adequate. The closer to the top hole, the better, though.

If its between the holes, your car has almost surely burned some oil. If its exactly in the middle between high and low, its about a half a quart low. Check it several times hot and cold, and get a good baseline of where it reads, and watch it closely from now on. With the specified amount of oil, it will read at the top marker or even up to a quarter inch above. Some cars read right at full with 5.3 and a filter, some (like mine) read a quarter inch over the full mark with precisely 5.3 (and filter).

Seems like as time goes on, more oil burners are trickling in!

Thanks. It is probably right in the middle after about 6k miles. Not sure where it started though.

What is the correct way to check the oil on this car? I was told to start the car cold, let it run for 45 seconds, shut it off, let it sit for a while, then check it. I was also told that the oil should be somewhere around the top mark.

I check my oil level with the car stone cold, without running it first. Make sure the car is on level ground.

You had mentioned that you don't change the filter all the time. Are you measuring the 5.3 with the old filter in?
