Holy ****! Find a new dealer. We have bought blades at 2 different dealers for 35-40/pair, and the h7 headlights cost the same. Now if he has hids, then 80/ bulb sounds about right

I don't think anyone who's burning faster and faster is going to have much faith in that car making it as long as one that's normal.
If a car is consuming oil at an increasingly rapid rate, then eventually it will surpass SOA's "1 quart every 1200 miles" prerequisite for replacing the engine. So at that point, you would get a new short block, and the problem would probably be solved.

If your car is consuming 1 quart every 1500 miles, and this rate of consumption is holding steady, then it's really not expensive, you would know how often you need to add oil, and if the car is dependable and performs well in every other way (starts every time; reasonable gas mileage for your driving style; doesn't break down in other ways and leave you stranded or inconvenienced; etc.), then my contention is that it's not a terrible problem, and you eat an extra $41/year to keep an otherwise solid car going for a very long time.

Either way, it's no big deal. Either you eventually earn a new engine, or you feed the car $6.50 of oil every 1500 miles. The car never grenades itself, and never leaves you stranded with a hugely expensive repair out of warranty. Compared to the VW TDI scenario, does this really seem like a tremendous problem to you?

Sometimes, yes. Maybe once ever 5 to 10 starts, it will be a little harder to start then loads of thick white smoke, oil smell.

And yes, if you touch underneath my rear bumper, your finger will get blackened by burnt oil residue (and obviously road dirt)

White smoke is water; either from coolant or condensation in the engine or fuel

Blue smoke is oil and black smoke is running rich

This may have already been suggested.. If so I apologize, but why dont you just get rid of the car? Trade it in on a different car?

Yeah that's been discussed, and a few lucky and/or more affluent folks HAVE traded/sold theirs. I'm not taking several thousand dollars in loss for subaru's bad. So while my, lol, "warranty" is up it wil be gone, or fixed/replaced.
I think that's the main problem with America from a consumer's standpoint. There doesn't seem to be much of an atttitude of holding big companies responsible any more. I never thought that a deficiency like abnormal oil useage would be something I'd be dealing with on a new, highly recommended car in 2012.
If I never get anything fixed with the car, I'll trade it when I find something that I really really like. I don't wanna make major financial choices based on emotion, or yes- I would have traded this for anything else long ago.
Since this has been the worst car buying choice/experience I've ever had, I want the next car I owe money on to be REALLY worth it.

Just checked my oil, somehow I managed to go through 12-16oz in the last 1000 miles. Will keep an eye on it. I have 4000 on the oil now, added .7 in that 4000. Leaving on a 2000+ mile trip in the am and I have 1 extra qt in the back just in case. When I return I plan to get a sample sent in for analysis to see what happened to my amsoil signature, the boxer engine might be really hard on this super lightweight oil

A little boggled as to where that oil went. I might just start doing 5k intervals even

If you're going to use 5k OCI, then you might as well save some money and switch to Amsoil OE.

have you actually seen what you could get for your vehicle at a dealership? or are you just assuming your going to take a couple thousand dollar loss?

I checked my oil again this morning, it was probably 3/8-1/2" above full so I added probably 4oz too much which makes me feel a bit better but not completely better. I will check it again when I get gas tomorrow

Even though it may only be a certain amount of loss each year in oil.....how do you know nothing else will go wrong from the oil being consumed?

If the car is burning oil with a brand new engine, what is it going to be like at 50k? That's the issue. It's the piece of mind you have lost with a brand new car. 79 might as well be driving a used car that cost 1/3 the price.

The cost of piece of mind in my opinion....is much higher than the literal price you quoted. What about all the trips to the store to get the oil and your time filling it up..checking it.....no thanks.

Our jetta has used , 1.5-3qts of oil per 10K since we got it, it had 28k on it and now has 114k. So far everything has been pretty consistent

Here is a good post, http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulle....php?p=1349742

And it makes sense. I saw really no consumption through 2000 miles on amsoil signature, then 6 oz from 2000-3000, and somewhere between 8-12oz from 3000-4000 miles.

I just had to add 3/4 quart to mine at 4500 (of the 6500 i run on a change) and i'm wondering, does anyone know where the cheapest to get the subaru oil is? So far the best I've found is this which i might even be able to get a better price at the dealer.

To all experiencing problems, I hope your concerns are resolved! I am aware of this issue from dealing with honda and toyota. Toyota is 1 qt per 1000 (neighbors camry) and Honda is 1:1200 (Dad's Accord) I know it is a nightmare, especially when travelling but at least in my Dad's case it stabilized after about 20K and was pretty predictable (actually got better from a low of 1500 to 2000 for the past 60k miles) after a while. In his case it was the oil the dealer was using, he switched to a quicky change that uses quaker state and it was much better.

^^Maybe you should use a 5k mile oil change interval, rather than 6.5k. Then you likely wouldn't need to add any oil at all between changes.

Haven't been on here in awhile and here's a update on my car. Since my last oil change in late October I was at 20,500 miles. Since then I've made a 3,000 mile road trip. 1,500 miles in my oil light came on. And I thought this crap was over with after it had been so long, went and picked up some oil and put in a solid quart. I was in Vermont at the time and talked to the service guy there which he was saying he had heard about about a batch of bad short blocks in these engines needing replaced. Something to keep in mind but for now I'm still under warranty so I'm experimenting with the whole thing. Two nights ago my oil light came back on at 27,500 miles. Added a quart and a half of oil. Also keep in mind my car is driven very hard every night because I use it for work. Light is off again after filling it back up but I also need to go ahead and change the oil. I'm not at the 7500 recommended but close enough.

Maybe, since you drive the car hard for work, you should switch to a lesser oil change interval. like 5k miles.

Just checked my oil still over the full dot after 900+ miles. I added before we left, but it didn't appear the highway cruising has really any effect. I wonder if the usage I see is from me driving it hard (which only makes sense)

perhaps, but for now i'm going to stick to 6500. any ideas on the oil?

to expand just a little bit, I check the oil at every fuel up, I've been watching the level and most of the consuming seems to have taken place after 3k. It did consume a smaller amount during the summer on the last oil change.
I have the gold 100k/6yr warranty, I have 24k miles since last feb and I do nothing that would be severe service, I've had nothing but good experiences with the dealer I bought from. (The nearest dealer OTOH I wouldn't trust to hold a snowcone for me) The service and parts have been awesome! I've only been to one other dealer in my 46 Yrs that I would trust as much. If I end up having a problem with the motor I'm not concerned as it will be fixed. I just happened to look at my Sticker and I noticed the standard warranty is 60K/5yrs on powertrain. Even for those without the Extended warranty, I would be pretty certain that their issues also will have to be resolved, if not right away, at some point due to the length of the std warranty.

it certainly does not hurt to discuss the issues with our cars, The seat TSB came directly from mcgyver fix in another thread. I understand the anxiety some of these issues cause, I've felt them myself for other cars that I've owned but I have confidence it will work out. If it is as massive an issue as some think, there will be a recall. If not, individual cars will be fixed individually.
