Default New WRX! Should I get it undercoated?

Hey guys I'm now the proud owner of a 2012 WRB WRX! This is my first Subie (Evo guy...sorry ) and I'm doing a few visual mods as well as some mods to keep it in good shape. I know these have some undercoating from the factory, but is it good enough/does it cover everything pretty well? I live in Indiana and we get a lot of road salt and this car is my daily driver. I want to keep this car rust free as long as possible so I don't mind getting some extra undercoat if there are any trouble spots to watch out for or even redoing it if the factory stuff is crap. I will say though that most Subarus I see on the road don't have any rust that I can see, so not sure if I should bother or not.

I'd say do it. I work at Ziebart in Rochester NY and had my 09 done brand new. I'm seeing some other 09 and 10's coming through to get done as used car rust protections and it is pretty sad how rusty they are considering the immaculate condition these vehicles are in. It definitely can't be left as an out of sight out of mind mentality. Do it and hopefully you have a place nearby like a Ziebart which does the annual rust inspection also.

Or you could get some leak seal and do it yourself for around 50 tops

I had a Subie for 10 years in Wisconsin and I never had it undercoated and I never had any issues. That being said, I tried to wash my car whenever the temperature was over 40 for at least 24 hours to get the salt off. That seemed to have worked. In the end if you take good car of your car, you will be fine. If you can't wash it often, get the undercoat.

I usually pass on all those dealer offered things like paint protection and rust proofing.

Regarding the rust proofing, as you said the car comes with it from the factory, and your 2012 is warrantied for 5 years against corrosion.

Second, many times the aftermarket rust proofing causes more harm than good. The car has areas that are designed to allow water to drain off. The rust proofing can plug these drain holes and actually cause rust under the rust proofing due to water pooling in these drainage areas and being unable to drip off the car.

Wash your car every 2 weeks or so, and be sure to spray off the undercarriage good and you'll likely have no issues.
