Hi everyone.
A few months ago, I made my first trip out to San Diego and hit some poor creature and cracked my front bumper (right side). I lost the fog light cover, and the cover that's more on the side (about 6"x6"), and have two or three cracks (about 3-4 inches long each). When I took it in for an oil change at the dealership, they said I needed to get the whole bumper replaced, due to the location/number of the cracks. They said it was only cosmetic damage. They had someone come out from Renew Paint and Body to do an estimate, which came up to $859. I haven't gotten it fixed yet due to lack of money and other crap. It's been about seven months and dammit, I want my car pretty again (though, 'cause my WRX is black, it's not horribly noticeable). Does the information I've gotten so far sound reliable? Does the estimate sound about right? I'm not running it through insurance because it's a relatively low cost and it's been so long since it happened (I couldn't run it through insurance when it happened 'cause I was still in the middle of legal issues with my previous car that got totaled (chick on the freeway on her cell phone, not paying attention to the fact that all the traffic in front of her was stopped...)). Additionally, can anyone recommend someone to do the work? I don't know the guys at Renew from anyone, and I'd rather give business to the friends of friends (okay, internet friends, but still) if I can. ETA - I'm at Guadalupe and 101, and would love to find someone close, if possible.

That estimate is kinda high. New bumper cover is around $200, with the amount of time it'll take to fix the cracks, might as well get a new one. 860 is kinda high though.
We share a shop with guys that do bodywork, i can ask them how much it would be to paint it, if you want. |

I don't know if the estimate is artificially high because they assumed it was going through insurance. In the past, I had success with saying "I'm not going through insurance, and I'll pay you cash" and getting a sizable discount. But this was 10+ years ago in a different city (different state, even), so I don't know if that kind of thing still works.
Looking at the breakdown of the estimate, there is Replace bumper cover, add for clear coat, add for fog lamps @ $269.95 Replace RT Side cover paint to match, add for clear coat @ $29.95 Replace RT Tow eye cap, add for clear coat @ $15.15 Then 2.8 hours for body labor, 4.7 hours for paint labor, both at $48/hr. And 4.7 hours for paint supplies at $28/hr. So the bumper cover price seems to line up, mostly. I didn't know if the paint costs were included, so I had to check. Any information you could get me would be great. ![]() |

The guy who has done my paint and body work in the past has a shop called metal asylum in Glendale. I drove all the way from Gilbert to have him do stuff for me because he is extremely fair on pricing. His number is 480 213 9618.

I can definitely recommend Elwood Body Works from past experience. I am fairly confident they will give you a cash price as well.
