Default RallySport Direct's 2015 WRX Build

The new WRX is one of the cars I have personally been waiting forever since the press release. I have been wanting something I can drive year round that had the same sharpness as my BRZ, and something a bit more practical. Subaru had got me excited for the new chassis and the new engine, and for good reason, they truly are phenomenal, but let’s touch on this later. All of this anticipation finally came to a head when I received a phone call, “Rick, have someone bring you down to the dealership”, I knew exactly why I had been called and what I was about to drive home, well sort of…

Arriving at the dealership I was presented with 2 beautiful white, giant scooped, Japanese built rockets. One a WRX and one the STi version. I was actually wanting to drive the new WRX. With so many changes, a great price point and the new FA engine, I was hoping I could drive it back to the shop. Well I must have been good this year as I was handed the keys to the FA20 powered beast. I immediately got in, instantly started adjusting the intuitive center dash screen setting it up for Temp, Boost pressure and throttle position. After pushing every single button in the car at least 2 or 3 times, I adjusted the mirrors, adjusted the seat, got a feel for the clutch grab point and I was off with a smile from ear to ear.

As of writing this, I have put 89 miles on the car, but that was in one night, with many more miles and smiles to come. First order of business is breaking the new engine properly, which is not always the most fun way to enjoy your new car, but this will ensure we can enjoy this car without worry for years to come. Without being able to really flog the car my initial impressions should be taken with a grain of salt, but so far all I can say is the new FA20 is a torque monster, I almost felt as if I had to be careful with my throttle inputs as boost would come on hard, and RPM’s would rise quickly in any of the lower gears. The chassis must be made from granite as it felt rock solid, I was actually able to lift a wheel pulling into my steep driveway at home, all while hearing the brakes stabbing at the traction less wheel desperately trying to send power to the other side. The steering wheel…. Oh the steering wheel! I wish I could express more excitement over the internet, but what a massive improvement over the previous generations, it just feels right in your hands. Subaru also answered my one wish I repeat every single year… “please make the steering rack quicker”, and they did just that. The Steering response finally matches the agility of the car, and I cannot thank Subaru enough, even if it is a bit vague, it’s still a massive improvement overall. Oh, and last but not least, the grip. I kept thinking, there is no way this car should have this much grip. You just simply throw it into a corner, body roll is almost non-existent, and the tires just seem to find grip, and more grip and even more grip, and it just never gives up. Not wanting to wad up a brand new shop car, I did not push it too hard, but I can only imagine the limit of this suspension, chassis and tires is extremely high, almost scary high for a bone stock car.

We will report back once we get some more miles on the car, and some more driving under our belts. We are so excited for these two new cars and I personally can’t wait to see where we take them.

Well, almost 400 miles on the WRX and the more I drive it the more I like it. The shifter was a bit weird for me at first, but this is becoming one of my favorite shifters. I'm not going to say it is as direct as my BRZ or as "manly" as my STi, but for a daily driver it gives almost the perfect feel and sound. I'm really impressed a cable shifter can feel this good lol. Still having a hard time finding the "perfect" seating position, but with a few adjustments I am more impressed with the seats compared to the first few days. Really itching for break in to be complete so I can take this thing to redline .

Thanks!
Rick

You guys should do a test to see if the new steering racks fit into the previous generation models, that would be fantastic. Really looking forward to see what you guys do with the new wrx and sti builds. I plan on picking up a new sti in a year or so as a daily.

No info at all on it. This is a BRAND new motor, and in this car has only been out for about 2 weeks now. There is not enough information out yet to show the limit or potential of this motor yet.

Absolutely. There is some good info there. I am loving the low end torque I am seeing on the WRX.

What were you wanting to know? We have had it up on our lift and the rack is a bit difficult to see as it is tight in that area but I would be happy to answer any questions you have

Went for a nice long drive the other night, and honestly the more I drive this car the more I like it. It's quiet, comfortable, and when you want to have a bit of fun, it definitely has that too.

Thanks,
Rick

I saw one of you in the BRZ white with blurple wheels at last years rally into spring at mark miller with curly hair in SLC lol, best looking BRZ Ive seen...been waiting on this WRX for a while. A bit disappointed at first with the design as I thought it would be more in line with the concept and with increased HP as I was hoping for at least 300HP stock as I used to have a 370z, However it has since grown on me and I now want one with the semi upgraded interior, handling and AWD that you need in Utah - interested to see where you can take this! Subd!
