Take the battery out and just run it off the power. A lot of the heat is the bad battery charging. And take a vacuum to any vents. Odds are that will keep you going for a while.

This. Take some compressed air and clean out the fans of any dust. Or you can purchase a laptop fan. When my Dell was overheating I bought one cheaper than this but it didn't have the USB ports on it.

Just buy a new lap top. They are super cheap these days and many places offer 0% financing of funds are a problem. Most anything out now will blow your current POS out of the water.

He's got a point.

Fry's regularly has decent one-off deals on laptops. We got a basic Lenovo last year for about $300. Nothing special, but well worth the price. Newegg is also a great resource, both for purchase and research.

Right now, Fry's has a 2 Day sale going on, 'til tomorrow. Laptopd starting at $259 for an AMD Compaq. 2 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig harddrive. Personally, I'd opt for at least 6 gigs of RAM, but it all depends on what your budget can support.
$359 for an AMD HP machine, 4 gigs of RAM and 500 gig HD.
Do some research on Newegg and see what machine matches up with your needs and budget.

Try upgrading the BIOS depending on the model...it may help...honestly..my HP does the same thing and its just the nature of the beast...sadly.

Other options as mentioned:

-air
-increase memory

No, just buy a new one. It'll last you a few years. Or if you're like me, a year or two

Sounds like you either need to replace the fan and/or add some thermal grease to the heatsink . Being a compaq it's really not worth putting money into repairing. You ought to spring for a new or newer (used) laptop. Stay away from Compaq. For that matter, stay away from HP (IMO). As much as people use their computers, one would think they would be open to spending a little more money to make using their machines more productive and enjoyable.

Good luck!

Faster than you need. When you run out of HD space buy an external.
