Phone call last week while at work:
customer states he has a 2010 Altima and needs a rear sway bar.

me: Is it a sedan or coupe?

customer: um.....I dont know what that is.

me: Is it a 4 door or 2 door?

customer: It is a 4 door.

me: Does it have a 4 cylinder or V6 engine?

customer: I dont know.

Then later in the week I took a phone call, a guy wanted to know the price on hubs. I asked him if his truck was 2WD or 4WD. He had no idea and furthermore didn't know what I was talking about. I asked him if he was talking the truck to a shop. He said he was doing the work in his garage.
I am thinking.......if you do not know if your Xterra is 2wd or 4wd and you do not even know what that means.....you don't need to be working on your own vehicle.....

I do not expect the average layman person who walks up to the parts counter or calls in on the phone to know alot of technical stuff about their vehicle but I do expect them to know some basics about what they drive everyday.
But it surprises me how many people do not know what year their vehicle is, or even what model Nissan it is. (I think it is a sentra).

Or even better....'I have a Toyota Avalon'.

Had a guy come in with a roof shingle, said it came off his pathfinder. I tried to explain that it was a roof shingle, he got irate and in not so nice terms told me he knows his car and what is on it. I told him special order will be in in a week. He never ordered it.

^It very well could have been his custom fender liner. Should have went with the architectural shingle.

Well, my Dad, who actually knows quite a lot about cars, was trying to find quarter panels for a Chevy Bronco, or a Ford Blazer. He could not recall which of the two he owned, nor why this was important. I kept trying to tell him that:

1) A Bronco and a Blazer are completely 100% different cars;
2) Ford and Chevy are totally 100% different makes; and
3) Blazer quarter panels will not fit a Bronco, and vice-versa.

Some visuals helped ram home these noble truths.

I work on friends/co-workers cars all of the time and lots of people come up to me for advice when their car has a problem. It always blows my mind how fking retarded some of them are in regards to knowing the year, make, model & trim of their car.

I had a lady last week come up to my desk at work

Lady: "you know lot bout cars rite?"
Me: "Uhh yea, you got a question about yours?"
Lady: "yea its in the shop and they checkin it out....SHIiiiiieee"
Me: "What kind of car is it?"
Lady: "it a Ford"
Me: "What model Ford?"
Lady: "Oh it uhmm...its a SUV"
Me: "An Explorer? Expedition? Escape?"
Lady: "Yeh!
Me: *facepalms while she drools on the carpet*

So yea she is getting brake work done on the car and someone I work with told her to ask me if the quote she got is legit or a rip off. $700 for front rotors & pads on an 04' Explorer...yea rip-off. I offered to do it for $300 and she hasn't given me an answer. Easy money if she says yes

I used to be a porter at a Nissan dealership and I got to see all sorts of weird ****. My favorite was Indian owners who take some sort of paint/ink and put markings aaaaalllll over the car. Sometimes we refused to work on it just because it was so bad.

My next door neighbor does that to the frame around the door to her apartment. Symbols that look an awful lot like swastikas.

I'm hoping it has a different meaning in the Indian culture.

I know this is going the other way, but I got new tires two days ago and the tech used a flat blade screwdriver to pry off the glued on tire weights. Instead of going at it from the back he just hammered on in from the front side and gouged the living crap out of all but one of my wheels!

I was not pleased. They are going to get them refinished, but I absolutely hate paying people to screw stuff up.

You said it right there. The oil pan was completely full and the engine itself was most likely too. She was obviously attempting to experiment with the limits of that engine as far as hydro locking it. I say well done, ma'am!
