A quick note before I begin. I'm no mechanic. I just work at a gas station. To some of my customers though I should be able to fix whatever ails them or their car. For example I had a lady with a new Beetle pull in asking if we had any oil because her oil light was on. I offered to check her oil levels and see how low she was. When I popped the hood the engine bay was covered in oil. The tube the dipstick goes in to had broken off her engine and it was spraying oil as she drove. I told her it probably wouldn't be good to drive. She asked if there was any way I could fix it. What the heck am I supposed to do, Macguyver a fix out of a cofee cup and scotch tape?

Another customer was complaining that her pump kept shutting off. Iwent out to look only to discover that she had already pumped ~23 gallons into her Armada. I told her it was shutting off because the tank was full. That fact seemed to go over her head since she kept arguing that she paid for 30 gallons, so the car must be able to hold that much.

Even if you're not in the business of working on cars you can still get your share of idiots with car problems. Heh

Bump, need more stories! Also, a swastika means something along the lines of hope. Hitler just stole it. Lol.

Yea a variety of symbols that have been appropriated for bad causes have positive roots in numerous cultures. The swastika has roots in numerous old world groups, often as a symbol of protection. How the Nazi's got it is a mystery to me.

I do jet engines (Rolls Royce RB211) but I love hearing stories from the guys at work that started in automotive. Like the person with a dead raccoon wedged in their suspension or the lady who filled her oil to the valve cover.

Also like the stories where the mechanic screws up. Like the apprentice who drilled through on engine block removing a frost plug.

I have seen some spectacular failures though. Failed turbine blades, fires, customers using the wrong chemicals to do compressor washes.

Things I hated when I was a crew chief in the Air Force:

Pilots kicking dog fight switches in the cockpit that have super small ball bearings that hold them in place. So after many man hours of searching by numerous people and with no success, the jet gets towed to a hanger and the seat gets lifted to search for many man hours If you still can't find it then the cockpit is removed and seat taken out and egress handles it from there. So the jet is down for 2 weeks or more because of a pilot's carelessness which is why most crew chiefs hate most pilots.

Things I hated when I was a tire tech many many years ago:

Working on german vehicles because of the stupid lug studs.

People who have leftover food in their vehicles and the vehicle smells horrible due to the car being dropped off and sitting in the sun all day.

Some pilots at least apologized and felt bad.....others were just like "sorry chief, have a nice day"

Couple of recent ones (service writer)

Customer phones in- car wont start, it's brand new. What should I do?
Me- call roadside assistance.
Cust- what's that?
Me- tow truck... Do you have a pen handy?
Cust- I only have a pencil...
Me- that should work

This one happens all the time-
Me- do you have your vin number
Cust- yes
Me- I only need the last 8 digits
Cust- (mumbling) 1,2,3,4,5,6... Okay, G528511
Me- facepalm.. what is the digit before the g?

Me- what kind of vehicle do you have?
--many answers---
It's a dodge Chrysler
It's a truck, it's blue
It's an oh ten
It's a two oh nine

Cust- I think I have a recall on my vehicle
Me- what kind of vehicle do you have
Cust- it's a ford
Me- you are aware that this is a dodge dealership, right?
Cust- yes, I bought it from you guys. So does it have a recall?

C- I'm calling about my truck. It's the black one.
Me- who is your service advisor?
C- I don't know. It's the black truck
Me-please hold... Hehehe

Anyways, should really take more pictures of the fun stuff I do get to see, like the dart we had towed in that hit an engine on the freeway. How? I have no idea.

I used a good portion of my Sunday morning reading this thread...

And oddly enough I feel it was time well spent.

Goes the other way also....

Me: I just put my winter tires and wheels on my '15 wrx. I installed 315mhz tpms sensors, can you guys reprogram it to recognize them?
Dealer: Sure! We have an appointment at 3:00 to do it... (appointment? really?)
[wait a couple hours, go have lunch...]
3:00-3:30: Me waiting... patiently
Dealer: We have you fixed up, good to go!
5:30: TPMS light comes back on. Do a little more investigation, and all they did was overfill my tires to 39/37/36/37, and reset the light. TPMS ID's are the same as my summer tires.

Default Sometimes i hate

I got one today

We had a cold snap this week and I had a tech on vacation so already a bad combination. "My heater doesn't work" "my car won't start" ect.

So this lady comes in that always deals with on my more probono service advisors that hasn't been in this week (he won't be around much longer) . So her car keeps dying and she brings it in saying she can't drive it anymore and needs it fixed. I proceed in telling her that I'm scheduling for Wednesday but she is more than welcome to leave it and we will try and get it in sooner.

4pm comes along and this lady calls asking my front desk for an update on her vehicle. I pick up the phone and tell her we had all our appointments show up and nothing got done way faster than expected so we have not looked at it yet. She instantly blows up saying that is unacceptable and she is a priority customer and her car should come before anyone else as she needs it back asap because she has things to do. I told her I would have one of my techs stay late and pay him overtime if she would pay 300 an hour (3X our normal rate) if she needed it in such a rush otherwise it will be worked on on Wednesday or sooner if we could. I also gave her the number to enterprise. (We don't offer loaners).

She then demanded that we store it inside with it locked if it had to be left for the weekend (this is a 1990 Buick). I told her that we could put it inside but we won't lock it as it is company policy not to have locked cars in the shop. Again she blew up.

Some people just amaze me.

Gotta love "smrt" people. I understand the policy to not lock it in the shop(with the exception of fixing door locks, and even then only for a moment). Should have told her that the window would be down when it was in the shop.

Silver_Echo

Told her unlocked keys in the car and window down just like the other cars in the shop. If the building caught on fire a fireman will move it or rip it out of the way if needed. That is where that policy comes from.

There really was no reasoning with the lady. She is a penny pincher that thinks the world should bend to her will.

Kicker is she said she will be talking to mike when he is back on Monday. So this saga may continue lol
