Default Do these new transmissions whine?

noticed it while on test drive and has been doing ever since i picked it up the other day. I dont mind it, it is just noticeable from the inside of the car and can be heard over the cat back. Figured it was just the center diff or something i dont remember my 02 whining like that just looking to see if somehting the new ones have.

1st gear and 2nd gear are a bit noisier than trannies from the 2.0L WRX era.

Yes, it's normal, especially for 1st and 2nd. I think Subaru wanted to instill some rallycar-like noises.

My tranny seems to whine louder than the engine roars under hard acceleration....and that's with some soundproofing along the tranny tunnel. I do however, have the aftermarket bushings in there. I like the tranny whine. It makes the car sound like a machine

you get some noise, but thats why they make aftermarket exhausts for the car!

I also noticed this whine in my 1999 outback as soon as I got it. At first I was a little wary of it but after 40k trouble free miles the trans is still rock solid, I figure that's just how the AWD trans sounds when the gears mesh. So it's not just the newer cars that make that sound. I think it's cool and I tell people it's my mini super charger they hear! Some people actually believe me at first haha

I just took my 12 WRX to Subaru of irvine. They said they need to do a tear down of the transmission. The car only has 5.6k miles on it. The whine noise has been there since day one.

So every wrx tranny has to be rebuilt? Every newer one I have ridden in and from what everyone else here has said theirs does it too. Your dealer is ripping you off.

There is nothing wrong with the whine usually. I have test driven four total WRXes that are 2011+ and all of them whine in the same gears. Mine does it a bit more because of Kartboy shifter bushings but I haven't had an issue with the car.

I doubt there is anything to repair, these 5 speeds are just noisy especially when you downshift into 2nd

I noticed the whine for about the first month, now I hardly notice it. I did have my tranny rebuilt at 750 miles though. 1st gear was out of spec or something and would cause the shifter to jump out while coasting.

I noticed it from day 1. Since I read on here that it was normal, I didn't pay attention to it. I received an e-mail that there is a recall to reprogram the ECM. I though to myself, since it's already in there, I'll have them check it out. Well, it turns out that the master tech wants to tear down the transmission. Now I have to wait till late Thursday or early Friday to have an answer.

Usually 1st gear will pop out while driving because of a bad synchro. Could be a bad fork or gear sleeve as well...

I noticed that my 08+ gear set wines more than my 06 gear set.
